New Mafell MT55c Plunge Cut Saw

...But you get two blades and a parallel fence. [tongue]

I've never even seen a Mafell in Canada, are they that popular across the pond?

Ha! Festool is a LOT more popular here and even then hardly anybody has heard of Festool, besides the pros. That'll give you an indication about Mafell.

Mafell is respected a lot, but not used a lot. Not outside of Germany anyway.  Very few dealers carry it. And even a search on the German/Dutch eBay site will list 3350 hits for Festool and only 141 for Mafell.

Mafell makes seriously good quality saws. It's their particular specialty.
I don't think any other manufacturer even comes close.

I was pretty sold on this saw - I had a demo from a Mafell guy - I liked the scoring facility which is supposed to enhance tear free cuts in laminates etc - but then a guy from Festool pointed out that if you scored first then did the cut, your edges - if butted together- would have a tiny gap between them so that made me less keen on that aspect of the saw.  The new rail which will vacuum itself to the material being cut seems very cool and the saw will work with Festool rails.  The base on my (old version) TS 55 is worn out and it will cost around 100 euros to replace, so I am tempted.  Mafell seem to be having a big sales push recently - for those in the UK they are even available from Screwfix!

i also like the look of mafell and have had a feel for one at a show. I already own a TS55  and i have just received my new TS75 yesterday  mafell do not do a large one.  The rail with the vacuum is a cool idea but it will get in your way a lot.

1. It stops you from putting your rail on the work piece as its fixes from underneath so you have to have it over hanging

2. You gotta keep your saw and rail together so you can't just leave your saw on the bench and lean the rail against the wall

3. It also requires a second part at the end to be adjust to the width of the sheet which caps the end off so no suction is lost from the over hanging rail on the other end.

4. Like me soon as i have done the cut i lift my saw and rail of quickly to do another cut with this you have to wait till your vacuum shuts down the remove the rail.( i don't use clamps)

In my opinion this vacuum is cool but it will slow you down.

what about this jmb? http://katalog.mafell.de/index.php?IdTreeGroup=12961&IdProduct=5095

plunges tilts to 60 degree, can be used on rail on not on rail, better all round

Yes seen that nice how it works on and off very much like it's little baby version my mate bought.  Just look at it though looks 20 years out of date don't it.

But i must agree i wish festool just added a lock on the saw so you could use it of the rail i don't know why they haven't its not that hard to add to the saw.

how does it look 20 years old????.  its the same saw hilti sell as mafell make it for em

Can I use a TS-55 on a Mafell rail?

I want that roll up rail they have.

Mafell makes a 26" 2 man circular saw that will go on their guide rails, is that big enough? [big grin]

Mafell is well known in the timberframing world, and has in the past had a close relationship with Festo/ol. In the not so distant past, Festool's line of routers were produced by Mafell, even the OF1010 is a Mafell design.

the saw seems to have some pretty interesting features but there website doesn't give much information about accessories, or perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place. Their jigsaw looks nice too.

my brother has just got the mafell MT55c  its a really nice saw, the features like the single lock bevel adjustment, the  stops on the bevel are good to, you hit a button to go -1º and to 47º,, the scale pointer spins round so the depth scale is correct on the track, and you can get a vacuum clamp that fits the track that works off the extractor your using for your saw, it has a filler piece on the base you remove and its then compatible with the festool tracks,,,,  i feel a bit inadequate now with my beloved ts55, festool will have to get there finger out as me thinks the King has lost his seat  [scared],,,,,, the jigsaw is pretty cool too,, took 5 years to develop its been out longer than the carvex and it looks the festo boys has been getting a few ideas of it,, like the clip on base plates

I've tried it out on some 15yr old pre finished board out of a kitchen, against me ts55,, here is a few pic's ,the  scoring cut (that round lever down next to the trigger) is really good and no it does not leave a gap,, bevel is nice and the red line indicator moves as you tilt the saw,, the blade change is very easy,, and the track is good you can start and finish with the base of the saw only halfway on the track with no play,, it has no riving knife mind, that might bother some but it doesn't bother me,,
the mafell had cut a lot of worktops with the blade in it, my ts55 new freud blade (i prefer them to the festool blades) that i had just used a couple of time on veneered MDF i also tried a newly sharpened festool blade in the ts, its hard to see off the pic's but the mafell was a slightly better cut ! The version of the router story I've read is that the OF2000 was a mafell design, and, in exchange the little mafell router was a festool design.

Hi, which type of freud blades do you use for the TS55? Would you recommend sacrificing the 10% discount of an MFT/3 table and buy the Mafell saw or would you say go with the TS55 and MFT/3 package.
I'm in the dilemma of which saw to buy and if it's worth the extra cost of the Mafell vs TS55.  :-\

if i had to start again and pick one it would probably be the mafell, i love the ts and have had it a few years now , just the mafell has a couple of nice tricks up its sleeve, you can go 47º and -1º just pressing a button as well as the scoring cut, i have only used the mafell for a sort time and the next time i have a lot of sheet material to cut up I'll lend it a try it properly . i have not tried in on the mft but i cant foresee a problem there, what ever saw you get you will not disappointed as there both great saws , i recon festool must have a new ts in the pipeline
the freud blades are FREUD PRO 160MM X 20 X 40T TCT and FREUD PRO 160MM X 20 X 24T TCT great blades , i wouldn't buy a festool one again, i only got them because of a review on the festool UK site believe it or not that put them the best blades  ?
