New MPT (multi purpose top)

I just came out with a new design for anyone that uses L-Boxxes!  I designed and built an MPT style worktop that quickly attaches to an L-RACK-S to give a highly portable worktop that works on a stack of L-Boxxes.  The reason that I used an L-RACK-S to attach the top to is that it gives space under the whole top for using accessories like clamps or Parf dogs.  The MPT L-Boxx Worktop can also be used as a mini track saw cross cut table when you use Parf dogs similar to the MPT.  The worktop attaches to the L-RACK-S with a bolted connection and a captive hardware setup that doesn't interfere with using the L-RACK-S as normal when the worktop isn't attached. For more info or for plans check out the blog post.

I also shot a couple quick Instagram videos yesterday showing how it all works.  I'll be doing a full DP Shop Talk episode about the MPT L-Boxx Worktop but these videos give you a good idea of how it works.

Here is the new DP Shop Talk episode showing how the MPT L-Boxx Worktop works and what it can be used for.  It is sort of a mini version of the MPT that attaches to a stack of L-Boxxes so it can be an alternative to the MPT in very tight working spaces or a complement to it in larger working spaces.  I know a lot of you guys use Systainers, how many use Sortimo L-Boxxes for some of your gear?

So, the crux of the biscuit is the LRACK-S.

I was wondering if Tanos had anything similar to the L-RACK-S. If they did I would make an alternate design that worked with it for the worktop.

Just to let you guys know, I'm working on a brand new website right now that will be the new place to purchase MPT plans and it will also have an active blog, portfolio of work, about section, videos and online store.  The new website will be danpattison.com and I'm hoping to have it up and running soon. I'll keep you guys posted!

I have just finished creating a brand new website that is the new home of the MPT!  The new site is danpattison.com and it includes a section about the MPT, a new online store to purchase plans through, an active blog where I will be posting informative content, featured videos from DP Shop Talk as well as a gallery of my work. There is also a short bio of myself and a contact form to get in touch with me.  The new website also brings a rebranding with a new logo that will be used for everything from my plans to videos to my local work.

Be sure to sign up for the free email newsletter while you're there as well to stay up-to-date with the latest blog posts, videos and designs.  I'll post the link below for the new site.  The new site streamlines the process of purchasing plans with a shopping cart and an instant download link after payment.  In the past I have emailed out the plans manually but with the new site you can get an instant download.  I hope you guys find the new site helpful and informative.  Let me know if you have any feedback or questions about the new site!

[member=63558]rostyvyg[/member] thanks for the purchase and I really appreciate the feedback.  Always nice to know that your work is appreciated :)  I worked as an architectural technologist for 6 years before I went full time with my woodworking business so I have a good amount of experience putting sets of plans together.  I find my experience in the architectural field comes in very handy with what I do now.

If you get a chance to submit some photos of your finished MPT you can do so at the link below as well as view other completed MPT's.  I'd love to see more user photos if any of you guys have finished your MPT.  Thanks again to everyone that has purchased plans.  Every little bit helps when raising a young family being self employed.

Don,

Hi.  One of my projects is to replace or upgrade my MFT 1080.  The top is pretty beat up and it doesn't quite match my needs any more.  Your MPT could be the replacement.

One concern for me is ACCURATELY cutting the 20mm holes in an MPT top.  One appealing solution for cutting these holes is Peter Parfitt's "UJK Parf Guide System" (UJK PGS).  Apparently it's inexpensive, easy to use, and accurate.  I'm curious to get your thoughts about using the UJK PGS to make an MPT top.

Here's a link to the FOG PGS discussion thread:http://festoolownersgroup.com/festool-sales-dealer-area/ujk-parf-guide-system-videos/ .  Please let me know.

Thanks,

Dan.

Hi Dan,

The UJK system looks like a great way to accurately drill the holes for the top.  I just watched Peter's video and it's a very well designed system.  The MPT plans do include instructions on how to make an accurate system of holes in the top using a shop made jig and a bushing and drill bit from Lee Valley.  I drilled the holes in my MPT top this way and my cuts with my track saw are bang on square.  I think the UJK system would do a great job getting the holes drilled in an MPT top as well.

[member=11196]Peter Parfitt[/member], great job on the design of the UJK system.  Having designed a lot of different jigs myself I can appreciate what you put into that.

Hi Dan,

Many thanks. It was 3 years of work with several dead ends and loads of attention to detail to get to the level of accuracy that the PGS can achieve. Every component has to contribute to the overall accuracy.

The only way to test any shop made hole drilling jig or even commercial system is to either do the 4 cut (some call it 5 cut) test or use one of those very clever measuring machines which cost more than my car. I made a video of my 4 cut test, which was done in a single un-edited take, and all the pieces cut are wrapped in plastic and preserved for inspection by anyone at any time.

My wife needed a large square for making perfectly square Roman blinds and so I roughly jointed some strips of wood. I had one good straight edge and then cut it perfectly square on my tracksaw cutting station that had been created with the PGS.

My apologies for putting all of this on your thread but I have an obsession with things being truly square.

Peter
