New MPT (multi purpose top)

I have a full set of plans in the works right now for all of the MPT accessories that I'm hoping to release early next week.  The plans will cover all of the accessories that are featured on the MPT blog including the dust hose arm, tool tray, power block mount, wheel brackets, cross-cut jig, sacrificial sheet good cutting strips as well as wooden I-beams to sit on top of saw horses.  I've also made a few improvements to some of the accessories including the dust hose arm, cross-cut jig and I-beams to make them quicker and easier to use. The plans will have the same level of detail as the main MPT plans so you can easily build your own.  As soon as the plans are available I will post the link. I will also be producing a video covering the MPT accessories and how they work so stay tuned for that as well.

Hello, thanks and welcome. [member=60532]Twoodman66[/member] the holes were made with a cordless drill and a 20mm brad point bit.  The instructions in the MPT plans & instructions package show how to make a jig to use with the brad point bit and a bushing to accurately lay out and drill all the holes. Both the bit and the bushing are available at Lee Valley. So there aren't any special tools required beyond those.

I just wanted to let everyone know that a full set of MPT accessory plans and instructions are now available!  This new comprehensive package includes the tool tray, power block mount, dust hose arm, wheel brackets, riser jigs (for use with saw horses), sacrificial cutting strips, cross cut jig and cross cut jig extension wing.  It is 30 pages in total and includes a cut list, hardware list, hardware source list, 17 full-colour 3D drawings, and 8 pages of instructions on how to use the accessories, with high resolution photos.  Click on the link to find out more.

Here is the new video to go along with the release of the MPT accessory plans and instructions.  In the video you can see how each of the accessories work and how they bring even more functionality and efficiency to the MPT.  Some of the accessories would also work with the Festool MFT/3.  Check out the video and see if these accessories would be helpful to you and your workflow.

Today is also the one year anniversary of when the original MPT plans and instructions were released.  It has been a great year for plan sales and that is in large part thanks to many of the FOG members.  Your support is very much appreciated.  Seeing something go from an idea in your head, to something that people from all different parts of the world are building and using is very cool.  I hope you guys find the accessory video helpful.

Just a reminder to anyone that has purchased base MPT plans that there is only a week left to take advantage of the package price on the accessory plans.  After the end of March the accessory plans will be $15 to buy separately.

The accessory plans have been popular and I'm looking forward to seeing some user photos of completed MPT's and accessories.  Also if you come up with your own custom accessories that are customized for your work I would love to see those as well.

Just wanted to share a photo of a completed MPT from caseyknips on Instagram.  He did a great job!  Instagram is a great place to post photos of your MPT either in progress or the finished product.  Just make sure you hashtag #multipurposetable or tag me @dpshoptalk or @foxhollowwoodworking.  Also if you would like to have your MPT featured on the MPT blog just email your photos and a brief review and I'll post them up on there as well.  I always enjoy seeing pictures from you guys of your MPTs.  Thanks to caseyknips for posting!

I just now sent you payment for the two sets of plans. I plan on using a Festool MFT top. I hope that will be possible.

Cheers,

Peter

Thanks again for your order Peter.  Using a Festool MFT top would work just fine.  You will have to adjust some of the length and width dimensions to make the aprons of the MPT come flush with the MFT top but other than that it should work fine.  The MPT top is a little bit bigger than the MFT top.

There is a new entry in the user reviews and photos section of the blog. Check out entry #2 from Casey and see what he has to say as well as some great pics of his MPT in action.  A big thanks to Casey for the photos and review!  If anyone else has finished their MPT and would like to have it featured on the MPT blog just email me your photos and brief review.

I'm not a big fan of sitting at a desk all day when I'm doing design work so I gave this a try today with the MPT.  I just put a couple L-boxxes and a scrap piece of melamine on top of the MPT and it made a great standing desk.  I have one of the Wellness mats from Lee Valley which is super comfortable to stand on so I worked at the computer all day and much preferred it to sitting at a desk.  I was finalizing design detail in Sketchup for the cabinet project I'm starting this week and getting my cut lists done.  I felt a lot better at the end of the day than if I had sat.

I'm just about to buy a Festool TS55 track saw and your MPT station looks ideal to use with it, plus a host of other tools.  A quick question before I buy your plans; do you know, if I can buy the legs in England?  I'm quite new to woodworking and far from being a professional, so I don't want to find that I have to make major changes to your plans, to accommodate a different way of fixing the legs, attaching stretchers etc.

By the way, your videos are really excellent, so please keep them coming.

[member=61101]Glennbrown[/member] you should be able to find the legs at just about any metal supply company or some hardware stores. In Canada and the US the legs can be purchased at Home Depot and are just a standard aluminum tube section.  I have sold quite a few sets of plans to the UK and people haven't had an issue sourcing the parts as far as I know.  If you have a good hardware store or metal supplier local you shouldn't have any issues.  Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks for the feedback on the videos, it's always very much appreciated!

Thanks Dan for an amazingly quick response.  I'll look around for suitable legs in the UK.  Looking forward to building the table.  Do the legs you buy from Home Depot already have the connections into which you attach the stretchers or is that something you manufacture as part of the build?

[member=61101]Glennbrown[/member] the connections are made as part of the build, the legs start as just simple aluminum tubes.  The plans and instructions show how to fabricate everything with detailed drawings on hole locations etc to make all the parts.  I designed the MPT so that it can be built from readily available parts and materials to make it doable for as many people as possible.

That makes it quite simple then.  Thanks.  (I wasn't sure if the legs were some kind of proprietary product which might not be available in the UK)

you can also get great legs from ikea. lots of selections and most of them are height adjustable too

There has been lots of work going on in the shop lately so the MPT has been hard at work too.  Here's a couple recent pics of it in use.  I had a cedar window frame to build for a client so I was using the MPT to clamp it down to rout the rabbets for the glass.  I was also using the MPT with my shelf pin hole jig last week on the current kitchen build that I'm working on.  Between the jig and the MPT it makes a really slick setup that let me fly through all the cabinet gables in no time.

The sale of the plans for the MPT and the MPT accessories has really exploded lately.  Thanks again to everyone for their support and be sure to email finished photos of your MPT to be featured on the MPT blog if you've built one from the plans.
