New MPT (multi purpose top)

Does anyone know if the plans list sources for the legs, and if there is a means to make the legs adjustable to account for uneven work surfaces?

In the MPT Hardware List, the legs are 36" Length of 1 1/4" dia. aluminium tube from Home Depot and 1 1/4" I.D. Rubber Foot from the same. I would guess you would be able to get adjustable feet that would fit the aluminium tube, but there isn't a source listed; at least not in the version of the plans I have from some time ago.

That's correct on the source being Home Depot.  The legs and the feet are regularly stocked items.  I had originally planned to make one adjustable foot with a screw type mechanism inside of the rubber foot but opted not to since I found a shim was the fastest way to make the MPT sit flat on an uneven floor.  I usually just keep a cedar shim inside the MPT when I pack it up and that quickly takes care of uneven floors when I set it up.  If you're looking for a more high tech method than a shim, what I had in mind originally was a wood plug cut to the inside diameter of the leg which would glue and screw inside.  You would put a threaded insert in that wooden plug and then have a wooden plug inside the rubber foot that has a threaded stud.  You could then simply turn that foot to raise or lower it.  Like I said I find the shim is the fastest and simplest way to level it but that is the alternate design that I had in mind.  Hope that helps.

Nice design! I'm quite intrigued.

Curious as to the set-up/break-down process? Looks like it could be a little bit of fumbling around?

I'm planning on making an mft style table, that also acts as an outfeed table. I really like how compact your table is. Perhaps hinged legs with your lower shelf still securing in the same manor might be an improvement?

Edit: I found the video on your blog, I see it assembles fairly quick.

This is really nice. Well done mate.

I bet with all those bosch tools, you're annoyed that they never brought their track saw over here.

Thanks!  I had originally thought about making the legs hinged but I found that the design I went with made a more solid setup with the legs fitting into snug fitting holes.  It also makes the storage of them efficient since they can all be secured side by side.  The MPT assembles or disassembles in under 2 minutes so it's a pretty quick setup.  I've been finding that whenever there is a client around when I'm setting it up they are always fascinated to watch it transform from a flat unit into a table.

Thanks!  I do wish that Bosch had brought their track saw to NA.  I like the Makita but the Bosch looks very nice as well.  Being quite involved in the BeThePro forum I am heavily invested into Bosch gear for sure.

For any of you guys that are in the US that are considering buying plans, with the current exchange rate the $25 Canadian works out to about $18.25 US.  By far the majority of the orders that I've received for plans have been from the US, but I think this is the best deal so far for exchange rate.

I have a couple new accessories in mind for the MPT that are aimed at speed and efficiency for cross cutting rips of sheet goods to length.  I'm hoping to get these designed and built in the new year and I would also like to create a set of accessory plans to make available too.  I'm in the process of setting up a new shop right now too and the MPT is going to play a central role in it for many different tasks.  Stay tuned for coming updates in 2016!  You can always find the latest info and updates at

Nice idea dan,

I've got two MPT's nearing completion. I've got a few ideas, like sacrificial dogs/standoffs for cutting randomly on top of the table. Maybe you've already got something better worked out.

One thing I really want to look into is some sort of removable bracket to hold my guide rails when not in use. As the table is constantly going from tracksaw to table saw outfeed.

That's great to hear that your MPT's are almost done. I'd love to see some photos if you're able to send some to me. I like your idea about the sacrificial standoffs for random cuts. I have the cross cut accessory that I made for making 90 degree cuts with the Parf dogs but it doesn't help for random cuts. A shorter version of the strips I have for breaking down full sheets would probably be similar to what you're thinking about.

If you take a look at the "full sheet cutting surface" on that page you'll see what I mean.  The same thing but shorter would probably work really well for cutting smaller pieces on without cutting into the top.  I like your idea for brackets for guide rails too. It would be pretty easy to make something that mounts to the 20mm holes on one of the aprons. I'm hoping to get some time in the near future to get a set of plans made up for all of the accessories.

I've just released a new video about the MPT showing the assembly process and the basics about what it is and how it works. There will also be another video coming covering the accessories for the MPT.  I have just started a new Youtube channel as well so keep an eye out for more videos coming or you can subscribe.  I'll be covering tool reviews, how-to's and shop tips.

Subscribed,

Quality vid, good choice it really helps present the table in a way that's hard to do through your blog alone.

Thanks very much! My goal was to make how the MPT works as clear as possible and like you said a video makes that much easier to do.

There are some new ways to stay up-to-date with info on the MPT.  The MPT appears in almost all of the new DP Shop Talk videos so you can see it in action there or as always on the MPT blog.  To stay up-to-date with the videos you can subscribe on Youtube, follow on Twitter or follow on Facebook.

I'm still planning to do a set of accessory plans for the MPT as well as a video showing how they all work.  Just haven't had enough time yet between working on jobs and getting the new channel up and running.  The blog is still the place to go for complete info on the MPT or to get plans. Thanks to everyone who has purchased plans!  The plans have been selling well and it's exciting to start to see photos and feedback from those who have built their own.

woodman_412,
I see t-track on the side of some of your MPTs. What kind/brand is it? And what is the slot width? 8mm?
Thanks.

Svar, that would be a question for [member=40517]MGB[/member] since those are the MPT's that he built and submitted photos of.  I know he told me it's Incra but I'm not sure of the size.

Dan's right, they are incra track's. They're a "regular" size, here's the listing from my purchase.

The incra track fits the festool quick + screw clamps perfect

Thanks for the info [member=40517]MGB[/member] .  That's great to know the clamps work with that track for future reference.  I've thought about getting some of the Festool quick clamps since they look pretty slick to use.  How do you like them?

I dont think youd regret it. I just recently got the quick clamps and really like them. Fast and easy to use. Makes changing out workpeices a breeze.
