New Plastic Dust Deputy

Jim,

The kreg flipstops work nice but aren't quite as solid as the production stop.  I have two flipstops because I broke the tab off one when I first designed the fence, I made the fence 1.5 inches thick.  Later when I found the production stop wouldn't fit I had to change the design.  The fence is still 1.5 inches thick, but I cut a groove to match the kreg track and mounted it down the middle of the thick fence.  It worked out ok but won't be as easy to match up if I make another matchig section to make it longer.

As for the norm hutch/bench, I made my top a little different than Norm.  Mine is two pieces of 3/4 inch ply glued and screwed together, and that is place on an oak frame on the flat on top of the vertical frame. Then I edged in 2 1/2 inch Oak leaving room to add the 1/4 inch hardboard.  Very strong... you could park a truck on it.  The deep drawers on the bottom are nice but without the toe kick its not comfortable to work on the bench much.  Good place to lay tools  and such as I work though.

So what hoses is everyone using for the DD?  I will probably go with the metal option... are people using the 1.5" or 2" option?

Mine is the new plastic one and it came with the 2 inch outlet that is tapered.  It fit my craftsman and festool shopvac and came with a hose with 2 inch fittings on both ends.  The steel one comes in 1 1/2  and 2 inch.  I'm not sure if it fits everything the same or not since the taper may be designed slightly  different.  Maybe nickao or someone with the steel 2 inch will chime in.

I was thinking about the idea of a Dust Deputy bolted/mounted to the lid of a No. 5 Systainer which could then be clipped to the top of the Festool Extractor...or would this whole setup just end up being too tall???  Would it be too much trouble to empty or could one used smaller garbage bags in the Systainer???

Best,
Todd

Todd,

I just ordered another dust deputy yesterday to mount on top of the ct33 so I'll see how well it works soon here.  I dont have the boom arm yet but I want to male sure they will work together also.  I may make a board that clips in where the systainers clip to the top of the ct and mount the bucket to the board.  Im not really sure yet but time will tell.

I just set up my new DD (the $99 kit) today. I was a bit skeptical until I tried it out. It works just as advertised. I'm definitely a satisfied customer. I only had one minor complaint... the metal flange that fits under the lid needed to be deburred, otherwise I'm sure I would have cut myself while handling the lid at some point in the future. But, that fix was easy for me to do.

Regarding dust containment while emptying, I don't see that that would be an issue. While I haven't tried this yet, a small garbage bag could be placed in the 5 gallon can to facilitate dust free disposal.

Todd,

I have mine now mounted on a board that clips in the top of the ct33.  It's not too tall I don't think.  I have also added a short piece of hose from the inlet side of the dust deputy down to the board.  It is mounted on the board as well with a double female on the end (2 1/2 hose to 2 1/4 shop vac fitting).  That is where I attach my festool hoses.  This way if I pull on the hose it doesn't stress the cyclone with lateral pressure at the top Instead it just pulls on the ct since its all screwed to the board with a strap.  Also the fitting to hook the hoses is right near the plugit so the cord and the vac hose run side by side.

The Dust Deputy comes with two buckets.  One is screwed to the board as a erceptacle to put the other one in.  I drilled a few small holes around the bottom perimeter of the bucket that is screwd down to relieve pressure when pulling the top bucket out.  To empty, you just pop off the lid and pick up the bucket by hand and carry away to dump.  When I set things up a little more stationary to a wall mounted boom arm,  I may put a 4 inch gate on the side of the bucket for emptying.  When my large tempest cyclone buzzes signifying it is full, it still has some room but I usually empty it rather than turning off the buzzer and risking a backup in my filters.  Since it has some room, this is the time I will empty all my dust deputy buckets by sucking the dirt into the large cyclone through the 4 inch gate.  Then I'll remove the bag from the large cyclone and replace.  This way the only time I'm exposed to the dust is when I empty the large bag from the tempest and I won't have to take anything apart to empty the dust deputy's.

If I pipe everything in completely it will really simplify the whole process and minimize my expose to dust clouds.  And even though the ct33/dust deputies will be attached to wall mounted boom arms,  they will still be able to be separated and become complete mobile units to roll around the shop without the boom arm or would be easily put in the truck to transport somewhere else if needed.  Somewhere in the process, I will also add some copper strapping or wire to make the ground continuous.
I've gotta pick up some things at woodcraft today and when I get back I'll try to take some pics of what I have done so far..

Here is my portable Dust deputy set up.  I comes completely off the ct for transport.  Has a separate hook up for the hoses so no stress is put on top of the dust deputy.  It can be connected to the festool boom arm.  It can also be connected to a wall mounted boom arm.  And remains easily portable.

Wayne,

Are you using the 27mm hose or the 36mm? When I tried using the 27mm on my older model steel dust deputy with the 1 1/2" tool port, it pulled the CT 33 down. I had to use the 36mm. Was wondering if the plastic dust deputy with the 2" tool port worked better with the smaller hose since it appears you are using the 27mm hose?

Looks good Wayne!!!  I can't wait to see it in person...  I like the idea of connecting the bucket to the DC Cyclone to clean out the buckets.  I wonder if a 4 PVC clean-out and screw in plug could be mounted to the bucket and used?

Best,
Todd

Les it seems to work with both hoses.  I'm not sure what you mean by "it pulled the CT 33 down"

Todd,

That might work....  My cyclone has a 4" gate on the bottom of the filter to clean it out.  It's just siliconed into 4" hole.  Hook up the hose and open the port.  It recycles the dust out of the filter back to the cyclone.  I figured the same setup would work on the side of the dust deputy bucket, but I didn't get one yesterday to try.  Next next Sunday would be a good day to play with the FMT.  Will you still be in town?

Les,

I have 2 1/2 inch hose connecting the ct to the cyclone and the same going to the connector for the festool hoses.  Maybe that makes a difference.  I'll go try it out with a few different tools and see if theres a difference between the two hoses.

Edit:  Both hoses work fine no matter which tool I use.
