New Plastic Dust Deputy

I just ordered one... gonna check it out.  It looks pretty good to me, comes with a short hose to go to the vac as well.

Just received mine last week.  I bought only the cyclone.  The free shipping took a total of 6 business days to arrive (NY to WA).  I sealed with Lexel and bolted it to a 5 gallon lid with o-ring.  I've crushed a 90 mil bucket already  - watch your CT settings!  I will look for thicker bucket and noticed most are 70 mil.  I wonder how thick the Oneida kit ones are...  The item still works fine even when bucket is imploded.  27mm and 50mm hoses fit direct and snug, no intermediate pieces required.  The 36mm hose justs fits by suction - it does not have fit as well as the 27mm and 50mm hoses.  I only use the 36mm hose for the TS and floor sweep so taping it is not an option.  Great setup.  Hope this helps!

Bob,  How is the quality of plastic?  It must be plenty beefy but it don't look like it is in picture.  I want to try one with a #5 systainer..  Has anyone had a systainer implode?
Wayne keep me posted when yours arrives.

Just my opinion.

With the plastic bucket you can see how much dust you have.  With the systainer you don't.  If the systainer is full, you could open it and create a big mess and also I think when you open the systainer, it will disperse more dust into the environment just for the action of the latches and the top.

The systainer is nice looking but I have my doubts about it.

Just my 2 cents.

Stoolman-
They did a great job on this (but not in the pictures you saw).  It is made of anti-static plastic.  I like it...

Keep in mind if you use a systainer, you will still have to empty it.  I would think that would be interesting with a cyclone attached to the lid.  Just 2 more cents...

I called and talked to Oneida about using the DD with the antistatic hoses. She HIGHLY recommended the metal DD over the plastic. Of course I live in the high desert where it is dry, dry, dry, so YMMV.

Bob and Fidelfs,  If you don't use a systainer,  what kind of bucket do you use?  I've seen a lot of demoes where people using joint compound buckets found that they implode.  I like this set up:

I have the boom arm on mine and I often wheel it around my shop and out to the garage.  When I do that, I have to pop a wheelie to lower the boom arm so it fits through the door.  If that makes sense.  The boom arm is too tall.
Using a systainer would keep everything contained.  For those of you using buckets or other containers,  what kind of saddle does she use to ride Ole Bessie, the CT.  Pictures if you got em.

Guys I have the Clearvue plastic and had the clear Oneida(gave to my bro) and I can say that the metal dust deputy is the one to get no matter the cost, it is that much better with with AS and much more durable. I cracked the Clearvue and cringed when I knock the Oneida over, but it did not crack.

The Oneida plastic seems stronger than the Clearvue plastic, but for some reason I just liked the Clearvue better, though my favorite is the metal Dust Deputy and now I have two and do not regret going that way. The metal buckets sold by Oneida are the shi*! Worth every dime to me.

Nick,  I'm sold.  How do you have it attached to your CT's.  Which size did you get, 1.5" or 2".  What hoses, reducers, connectors do I need.  If you please  ;)

I have a 35 gallon cardboard barrel from Penn state that they use on their large cyclones.  I bet the DD cyclone could be mounted on top of that.  And you can put a contractor trash bag bag in them with a bag retainer.  Then when its time to empty, you just pull out the retainer and all the dust remains in the bag.  And it would take a while to fill up 35 gallons i suppose.  Might work well with the kapex since it is stationary.  I ordered the whole kit but I'll see if it looks feasible for a second one.

Well, I have the metal blue dust deputy and it came with a plastic bucket made for Oneida.

The cradle is a work in progress.

I decided to make my own to go between a Kapex and my CTL Midi, as the dust bags for the Festool Midi are over ?16 for 5.

I used a piece of software called Cone Layout to develop the cone area

I cut this from some 2mm aircraft plywood I had in the rack, the bin I got from Ikea a while ago.
I rolled up the 2mm ply and steamed it with SWIMBO's Iron and left it to dry tied up.

I overlapped the plywood by 12mm and glued it together.

All the main parts were cut from a 12mm birch plywood offcut

I offered up the 38mm pipe to mark the intersection and cut it out

I partly assembled the cyclone to bond the tube with 2pack wood filler.

All assembled.

I used the 6mm studding as it is extremely quick and very strong, the very top section is just to secure the top of the pipe, and the third one is to support the inlet pipe bracket.

Does it work ? ....Yes the big pile came from the Cyclone bin, the small one made it to the extractor.

When I get time I will take it apart to spray it inside and out with clear lacquer.

That's damn fine cyclone!  Wish I had or had access to a cnc router.  Thanks for posting.

Stoolman,

I got my 99.00 Dust deputy today and have it hooked up... All I can say is I'm getting two more for the other vacs!  This one is hooked to my craftsman vac on the kapex.  (The dust deputy comes with the intermediate hose)  And when I get two more I will set them up on the ct33's with boom arms.  It also comes with two plastic buckets, one to mount so you can set the dust deputy with the second bucket into it if you want.  (Using one bucket for a holster if you will)  It will  fit inside a systainer or you could make a board with catches on the bottom to fit the ct33 systainer mount and mount holster bucket on the board.  It can be grounded to the metal ring that bolts on the inside of the bucket under the cyclone.  And you can see the dust level inside the bucket as it fills.  I have a box of bags for the ct33's that will last a long time with this set up... and I won't have to worry about losing suction as the bag fills or plugging the hepa filter as fast.    It is made of heavy nylon like plastic that should hold up as well as the steel version but time will tell on that one.  Definitely a two thumbs up set up!

Wayne, thanks for the followup.  Take some pictures when you get your DD for the ct's!

Add my vote to nickao's on this one. I have the Clearvue plastic and am on my second bucket. Crushed the first Penn State fiber one. The Clearvue plastic just seems wimpy to me. I wanted it so I could see the dust swirling around but that was sort of a honeymoon thing.

If I had to do it all over again it would be the metal dust deputy without a doubt.

Cheers, Bill

Hi Wayne,

I would be interested in how much dust you get in the vac ?

Paul

Paul,

I only did a short test.  I tested it last night with no bag so I could see what accumulated in the vac and I got no dust at all in the vac.  I then put the bag in so I'll see how long it takes to get any dirt in the bag.  Right now its on a craftsman vac, like the one in the dust deputy video which is on my kapex.  Later I'm going to add them to the ct33's and see how they do for everything else.
