New Post Alert in Browser Title Bar

Ok, so this one is for me. I've often wished the forum had this functionality. Since it didn't, I created it tonight.

If a new post is made on the forum, your browser's title bar should now "flash" the number of new posts ahead of the actual page title. I have tested this in Chrome, Firefox and IE so far. Unfortunately, it did not seem to work on IE. I don't have Safari loaded on my notebook, but I'm sure one of our Mac users can let us know if it works or not.

Also, it works whether you are logged in or not. Note, it does require that javascript is enabled on your browser.

This should make it easier to determine when to refresh the page without having to constantly check for new content. Since I multitask and want to keep an eye on the forum, this will make life a little easier for me.

Let the feedback begin.

Shane

Can you post a screen shot of what we're looking for, please?

I don't immediately see it in Safari, but if nothing else I can blame the drugs...

I'm sorry, but I find the flashing irritiating. It's this old instinct wired into people's brains that when something moves in your field of view it draws your attention.

It's working on Mac Safari for me.
I also don't like the flashing, I would prefer the number in brackets to remain steady.

I knew there would be someone who didn't like the blinking.

Wayne, here's what you're looking for. In this image, there are 4 new posts that have been made since my last page refresh.

I don't see it, but I'm pretty sure I have java disabled.

Not Java, it's Javascript that's required. It will only appear if there are new posts since your last page refresh. So, you may have to give it 10-15 minutes to make sure there's a new post on the forum for it to appear.

Shane, This is a brilliant idea - just waiting for a new post....

Sorry, meant to type javascript.

I have it enabled but do not see the count. And I verified that I *do* have unread messages...

Don't waste any time on this for me, Shane. I probably won't use the feature but wanted to give you feedback.

It does not show a count for unread messages (PM), but new public posts in threads.

And, like I said, does not appear to be working in Internet Explorer currently.

Yes, I understood that.

Guess I am not being clear today - please excuse me and blame it on the drugs?!

That is right - I am running IE 10.0.9200 under Win 7 Pro.

For those looking for it, it is actually on the browser tab, not on any FOG page or menu.

So will this be a feature that can be disabled on the user end, other than turning off javascript?  Or will I have a continuously blinking browser tab while I am using several browser windows at the same time for other sites? IE so currently no blinking.    [bite tongue]

Seth

Not something that can be disabled. But, I turned off the "blink" this morning and now it just shows the number.

Oh, well in that case get the no blink version working for IE  [poke]  [wink]  [tongue]

Yeah, yeah. Not sure what IE's issue is. It's always a problem browser. I don't use it and don't recommend others use it because it's generally less secure. I'm not just saying that because of this either.

It works when I'm in debug mode without changing the code at all.  [huh]

I posted my code somewhere to see if anyone can figure it out. Hopefully someone else can see what the issue is. I'm scratching my head on it.
