New To Routing. Seeking Opinions

Hey guys,

    I just received the Bosch 5.6-Amp Colt Plunge Palm Router Kit from my Grandpa for Christmas and once it gets here this coming week I will finally get into the routing field. As all you experienced router users know, there are a crap ton of different bits and this is where I need help/advice/opinions. I'm looking for a good starter router bit kit and I'm wondering if you guys can recommend a particular set or brand. Since I work at the Orange box, there are plenty of Diablo bits and I suspect they are probably decent since their other blades are known to be high quality. I was also thinking about Bosch bits or Festool bits. The only thing abut Festool bits is they don't really come in a "starter kit".

    Any suggestions on brand or a particular kit?

i have bought kits from woodcraft and rockler when they are on sale and they have worked very well for my hobby uses. the only bad thing about kits are you will problably get bits that you may not use. I have purchased single bits from freud, bosch, and rockler and like the freud bits the best.

As the router you are getting is made for light work maybe you can start with a round over and a flush trimming bit with bearing on the bottom. I would imagine the router only takes 1/4" bits and i prefer 1/2" bits for heavy work like dado's and rabbets. I would invest in good bits like Whiteside and use the router for a while. Just my thaoughts, there are many out in the fog with more knowledge. Good luck, stay safe.

I only imagine myself using the router to make simple trim, rounding edges, making small grooves and routing slots/flutes to connect pieces of wood.

For your first bit set I'd recommend checking your local pawn shop. Many times I have seen complete unused sets for 20 bucks.
