I've purchased a 1010 router but I can't get the 8mm bit to fit...I think part of the collet is stuck in the router but I wanted to be sure ....

Take a look:

What am I doing wrong? Any input appreciated

To clarify what I think the issue is, in the second photo you see two collets. One of them has a silver ring inside the other one doesn't. I think the internal silver ring that is missing from the larger collet is stuck in the router. That's why the bit doesn't fit because that silver ring needs to come out to expand and accommodate the 8mm bit.

As it is, it doesn't fit

Most of the collet is still in the router….

Suggest you replace the nut and, gently, insert a router bit of the correct diameter shaft and 'wiggle' the collet until it comes loose.  Then remove the bit and the whole collet assembly.

If the nut has been tightened down too far without a bit in the collet, you may have some difficulty in removing the offending piece - just do so carefully without damaging the stuck piece.

As said: collet stuck. Go to your next Festool-dealer and ask them to get it fixed. IMHO, don't try to pry it out, you might bent the shaft of the router. I dunno if you you could try to screw the nut back on, the collet kind of 'clicks' when it's arrested in the collet-nut.

oh maaan, I was really looking forward to using this today. Ok thanks I'll give that a try.

I did try to tighten the nut down but I didn't get a click, will try it again.

I can't put an appropriate size bit in to jiggle it out, I only have 8mm which won't fit unless the collet is opened up...

Thanks for the quick responses

Is it the half-inch collet that's stuck or 6mm? You might have a 6mm drill bit you could insert.

If you have a piece of high friction material, rubber jar opener, or even a rag, you might be able to grab it and twist/pull the collet out of the router shaft.

I've seen this happen on a new router. Apparently, someone in the factory tightened the collet with no bit in it. It causes the internals to get stuck in the taper of the shaft.

I've also just tapped it lightly and inwardly radially in a circle and it came loose. It's not a big deal...

This ^^^^

Tap it gently on the side with a plastic or rubber hammer and it will come right out.

Not sure how the 1010 is constructed but I would be carefull with penetrating oil.
If they get into the bearings it will desolve the grease in there, which is not a good thing.

ok, no penetrating oil then, good thing I checked back I was just going to put it on. Thanks.

Next plan...I've got some canned air which is very cold when it leaves the spray can. I'll try to cool down the collet by spraying it so that maybe it'll contract relative to the ....whatever it is that's holding it

It's hard to get hold of it, the space around the collet is very tight. It is a little router after all

Gently grab it with a pair of plyers en twist and turn with care?
Annoying problem you have there...

Hey I use my counter top for woodworking too.  I noticed the bottles in the back ground and thought it was funny,  being thats common at my house.  I normally use my water stones at the kitchen sink to my wifes disapproval.  Good luck with your router issue, cant help there.

It's like it's fused...I'll talk to the seller tomorrow to see if I can get a replacement. I don't want to start using pliers, it'll only damage it further

Probably the best choice, I can understand you are keen on using it and trying to fix it now!!!
Sure you will have no problem returning it.

I just learned another way to remove a stuck collet on a 1010...

This image, provided by the OP, illustrates it somewhat:

The shaft lock works through a hole in the shaft. If you turn the shaft the hole will be visible and the top of the stuck collet part should be accessible through the hole. It should be available to be pried loose.

Never seen the 1010 irl, but my guess would be that you are right.
Like to see if it works

Our wives put up with a lot...I must do do something nice for mine tomorrow God bless her.

In this case my wife needed my help with putting the kids to bed but I was so keen to get started with some dado-action ( [embarassed]) that I was reluctant to leave the garage. In the end I brought the router into the kids bedroom and have been tapping away at the collet in the en-suite whilst running the tap in the background to feign the bottle washing I'm supposed to be doing.

Oh dear
