Non-centrotec chuck on C12 doesn't fit all size bits?!!

I tried to fit a 1mm (got no idea what that is in imperial :/) bit in my C12 and the bit was too small! The chuck tightened but the bit slid in and out. I was horribly disappointed. I know you don't often use a 1mm bit but I am building a dolls house for a client and if anyone has ever built one you know things get small. I was sad that I had to revert back to my B&D which ever time you let go of the trigger it stops so suddenly there is a slight spark and the jolt loosens the chuck.

Point is that I'm shocked that B&D can do it but not Festool. I looked and it has got to do with the way the chuck works. I'll take some pictures tomorrow and show you.

Anyone know if this continues with the T series or the new 15 series?

Chris, I have both the C12 and the T15 right here and they have the same chuck. On the chuck there's an imprinting that says 1.5-13 which means it will take bits from 1.5 mm to 13 mm. No idea why they didn't make it so that it fully closes. But personally I use a mini-mot or multitool, Dremel, whatever you call it, when working with such small bits so I'm not bothered by this at all.

There are to types of chunks.
- 491350 BF-FX 10 Fastfix
- 490698 BF-FX 13 Fastfix

As the numbers tell you the FX 10 will take drills from 1-10 mm and the FX 13 will take 1,5-13 mm.

The latest T12/15/18 and C12/15 drills only have the FX 13 chunk.

So you can order the FX 10 separately.

Well, to get a quick solution for the problem..  in a similar situaltion.. i was using some clear tape and wound a few round around the drill bit which filled the gap and worked pretty good..

To close down on really small drills the chuck jaws need to have very narrow faces. This makes them susceptible to wear and/or damage when used on larger drill shanks. They will also be more likely to slip. Most drill chucks that can hold 1/2 inch shanks will usually only close down to about 1/16 or 1/8. Even many 3/8 chucks don't close below 1/16. There are precision keyless chucks with 10mm capacity that close nicely to 1mm or less but it is usually a 6mm or 1/4 inch chuck that is used for anything smaller than 1mm. These are chucks found in toolrooms, not on cordless drills.

Now I realise that on the B&D it says "1-10" and on the Festool chuck it says "1.5-13" but I don't know it just seems odd. I guess you use sizes 11-13 much more than size 1.

Well here is the unfinished doll house I am working on. The client asked for something simple.

Now just got the doors to do. These doll houses are deceptively time consuming to do.

Its for action barbie........she climbs the outside of the building to get where she needs to Oh and Chris i have bit smaller then 1 mm that has a hex end so they fit in my CDD 12 fx. But honestly drilling holes with a bit that less then 1.5 mm using any cordless drill is risky. Ive broken a few 0.5mm bits already. I use my dremel now to drill those tiny holes, there is less weight behind the bit so its harder to bend in wrong direction and snap it.

Ha. Yeah I laughed at there being no stairs but I guess kids have active imaginations. Maybe I should have put one of those roll up ladders in there  [tongue]

The client was very specific on what she wanted. There was one in the place she worked and she said she wanted one exactly like it. What the client wants, the client gets.

Yeah I know, with the weight of my C12 it is hard to get a good feel for the bit. As I've said before the frequency of use of a bit smalled than 1.5 is so low that I can understand why Festool don't generically support it. Funny thing Wayne, I used the dremel to drill those too. That little extension thing that goes on the chuck is very usefull.

It was a pain to finish though. My mom managed to drop that frame and cracked open 90% of the glue as I was reaching my deadline.  [eek] [scared]  [sad] [crying]
