I was referring to the mortise and Tenons! On the truss only!   Hence why I said Domino XL as that is what is replacing the traditional method.     I didnt say EVERYTHING was hand cut.

I was only messing any way!

Im all up for modern methods much rather do da then  chiseling mortise holes! My arms where getting little tired!

Thanks!  Just shame they wont stay like that  will they  [crying]

I much prefer working with Cedar lol I know the joints will still look good years down the line  (plus far easier to cut and chisel)

That matters not... they were perfect when made, what the natural movements of the timber after the fact make of them is above and beyond any mere mortal's control...therein is the beauty of wood. [thumbs up]

Nice JMB!  I like it.  Guy even liked it so much, you had him crying at the word mortise.  [crying]

Question.  Why not, not expose the tenons (housed tenons/blind tenons) on the upper faces of the truss so rain, snow, ice has less affect on them?

Ken, as it is a porch one would assume that it will be covered with tiles or shingles.... cedar shingles would work in nice with it too JMB.... so exposed tenon ends would not be a problem. For a pergola, as it resembles during the dry fit, stopped or stub tenons would be the preferred method.  [smile]

I know you were only messing - so was I - I knew what you meant. It's looking real good and those curved shoulders are spot on.

Hi Ken,

Cheers!

The Tenons are not exposed they do not go right through they are stub tenons!  lol Come on 95mm deep tenons is far enough for me  going 150mm no way!  [tongue]

Like Rob said it doesnt mater any way.    It will be tucked under the roof set back about 300mm and will be supporting the ridge and stop the wall plate spreading.    So no rain or snow should ever get near it.

Shingles would be nice  but its being tiled.  The client knows a builder and he was going to  felt & lath & tile and do the lead flashing but the client has decided he wants me to do the porch from start to finish so he knows its done right thats what he said.  I dont really like tiling to much and pointing up the gable end aint my speciality im a little to slow cus I keep messing cant help my self but I do know ill properly do a tidier job then a lot of bricklayer/builders I know so I agreed to do all of it.

I forgot my Camera last time I went but the client took some pictures and just sent me some to day!

Just thought I would post an update!  The roof has been cladded and felted but I dont think the client took any pictures of that stage yet! Next job is the get it tiled and then  make a  door frame to fit the opening and door  and fit the new bought door.

The trousers are the least of your problems as far as be looking scruffy is concerned. [tongue] [big grin] [big grin]

The porch is looking good, so is the fence/wall/railing in the background.

Dude, did you get dressed in the dark ?  You put your jumper on before your tee shirt  [poke] [doh]

Porch looking really nice though.  I hope the bought door doesn't spoil it.
