It may be a UK thing but where the top section of handrail goes into the wall we normally finish off with a half newel.

Every joints was cat on site. End of handrail is owner choice, half newel or rosette.

Are the risers and skirt boards primed wood or MDF?
The rosettes are common here too, but our UK brethren see otherwise [wink]

wouldn't need a post just an up easing from the 90Degree turn to the handrail to ease it up
