Apparently, the FOG does not work well with the short URL that YouTube provides for sharing across different platforms. When a member includes the short link provided by the YouTube share function, the video does not appear in the body of the text.

Fear not, there is a simple fix. Use the long URL in the browser address bar.

Here is a screen shot of the video I want to insert in this post:

FOG-1.jpg

Do not use the Share link that YouTube provides. Instead, use the long URL in the address bar.

If you disregard this advice and use the Share link, you will see the short URL which will not work. Don't use it.

If you follow these simple instructions, the video will appear in your post for all to see and enjoy.

Also, if you use short link Santa will put you on his naughty list and will NOT give you Festool for Christmas.

Moderators, can we pin this topic somewhere front and center?

A little addendum to what Mike said above: it can only be the long URL, but can also not have extras added, just the base URL.

Because sometimes YouTube adds extra parameters after the URL, seperated by the questionmark " & ".

Like:

[attachimg=1]

This one will not work because it has " &feature=youtu.be " added at the end.

The URL must only have the " watch?v= " in it, like this:

[attachimg=2]

I don't understand why nobody at Festool can be bothered to program the newer type URL in the software of this forum. I guess now that Shane left, they don't have anybody who can.

Perhaps I might be able to do it if moderators would let me have a look at the source code.

While it's true that to insert a video in the body, the long URL is to be used. But as I posted the video link in the thread below, the short link can be used and shown as part of the text (post #1):https://www.festoolownersgroup.com/other-tools-accessories/sawstop-another-user-test-(unlike-the-usual-demos)/msg614506/?topicseen#msg614506

Whether the long or short URL is used, there's no extra work for the viewer/forum member. It's still just one click away from watching the video.

  [member=71429]DerickC[/member]  and [member=50814]ScottW[/member]    is this something that can be fixed?

Of course it can be fixed.

SMF has a very active community as it is used all over the web.

I remember this forum at first didn't have the ability to show YouTube videos and I believe Shane added the functionality.

A little googling shows that the functionality of embedding videos in SMF forums is added by using mods.
https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=545911.0

On that page the mods are discussed, and when you follow the links they give you'll see the newer YouTube URL format is supported by the newer mods. Of course, when Shane left no one at Festool bothered to look into this and update them.

This mod mentions the new YouTube URL:

I haven't been a webmaster for a long, long time, but from 1998 to 2005 I ran my own website with my own forum I've coded myself in Perl 5.
