OF 1010 and guide bushes

Hi Peter. Morning!

Yes, I've got most of that (seen the videos I think too), in fact using the mandrel on the OF1010 is what's prompted me to go for the threaded adaptor. The mandrel is a faff to repeat over and over on the 1010, mostly due to the lack of a ratchet IMO.

I'm specifically asking about the inlay sets though. Which ones fit the Leigh adaptor in the UK. I didn't think that was in the video, correct me if I'm wrong though.

Hi Dan,

Sorry, I missed the point about the inlay sets. I have not seen anything that fits the UJK bushing (which is a pity). It would be so simple to knock up a set, in brass, to compliment the UJK set (and all the others, made in the same factory, on sale around the world).

Our PMs crossed. The Leigh adaptor (I think) means that anything that doesn't specifically state any fitting, will probably fit. I say I think, as most of the ones I am looking at don't mention a "fitting" as such, just wanted confirmation from someone who has one.

There's not much of a clue how this fits for example, so I am hoping it'd screw into the Leigh adaptor.

I suppose all one really needs for an inlay set is either a pair of complimentary sizes from the UJK set (or any of the clones sold elsewhere in the world) or an adapter ring that fits over the guide bush that increases the diameter for the male cut.

I am tied up today but will also look at all of the sizes in the UJK bush set to see if there are any complimentary pairs (one doing male and one doing female). I seem to recall that I have done this once before and found that it only works if the cutter is bigger than the bush !!!

I was thinking the same thing, but it's Sunday morning and it required maths.

I just did a quick "Google" and this has a 1 3/16" (29.7 mm) fitting which will fit very nicely in the 30 mm hole of the Leigh adapter plate.

Peter

So you think it would screw in or fit inside and be secured with the female ring?

Hi Carl

My set for my old Stanley router is just like the Trend set. The Whiteside is almost certain to fit the Leigh adapter as is.

That whiteside kit has a secondary bushing, you take off / put on depending on what part of the inlay work you are doing.  Trend sell something similar.

As you can see, the larger part is just a push fit. The whiteside kit will be the same.  [smile]

Roger that Carl, but just to clarify, I know how they work, outer ring and inner ring to offset sizes for the male and female part of the inlay, it's the bushing itself that I'm trying to figure out will fit into the Leigh adaptor - but I think Peter's measurements indicate that it does.

The Trend review I read seemed to be moaning that it's not a very long cutter and only good enough for veneer work, see my post at 7:14am.

Ahhh yes i realised after reading Peter's last comment what was meant.  [embarassed]

Annoyingly the Trend (which is a lot cheaper) looks like it might even fit the 1010 out of the box - I say looks like, I mean it has two screw holes  [tongue]

I was thinking the same thing, but it's Sunday morning and it required maths.

Although the benefit in making your own in that way, so to speak, would be that you could use a bigger bit and therefore longer cuts. It would just mean larger radii on the corners of the female cut? Nothing a chisel can't cope with I suppose.

If anyone is following this, and having checked the UJK diagram on the Axminster site, it would seem that the following might be true:

Using a 6mm cutting bit, and utilising the same template shape for both male and female, I think a 10mm guide bush for the male (giving an offset of 8mm from the edge of the template - 2mm for the bush and 6mm for the cutter) would work with a 22mm bush for the female - which doesn't exist in the set unfortunately. It's a bank holiday in the UK, it's why it feels like a Sunday - forgot it's a Monday, so the Sunday excuse still holds up for my maths.

Back to plan A.

Oh and I found this old post from 2011 which appears to confirm the Whiteside fits the Leigh adaptor in an OF1010 - now to find stock of the Whiteside set in the UK.

Yes, I saw those, but they look so much like the Whiteside (including the mandrel thingy) I was worried it's some kind of knock off.

These chaps have been very good before now, I've sent them an email to see if they can get stock - they do list it, so perhaps it's a possibility.

Ahhh cool. Let me know if they can get them. I could be interested. I have  a few porter cable routers and use their guide bushes. So that could be handy  [smile]
