Hello.

I'm new here.  Just bought my first Festool piece -- a 1010 router.  Quite excited to put it to use on my guitars.

Forgive me if this topic has been covered and my searches could not find it.  I also found nothing on Youtube.

Need to change out the 8mm collet for the 1/4".  When I remove the black collet nut, the collet itself stays behind.  The manual indicates that the collet should come out with the nut.  I don't believe they should separate at all.  With the router on it's base, I am turning the collet nut clockwise.  I have had Ryobi and Porter Cable routers and there was no trick to changing the collet this way.

So, my simple questions:

Is this user error  [smile] and I am doing something wrong?

Or...do I have a bad collet and/or collet nut?

This seems so basic.  I am dumbstruck that this simple task could give me problems.  I appreciate any help.

The collet and nut should be captive, not separate.  With the nut off, You might try lightly squeezing the collet with a pair of pliers to see if it is seized in the router.

The collet should unscrew with the nut and come out as one piece that has the collet loosely attached inside the nut.

Give it a try and if it does not free give Festool service a call on Monday.

Welcome to FOG.

Neil

It should be the same as the other Festool collets. After you get it removed from the router, reassemble the components and make sure the o-ring is in place.

Thanks, Neil and Rick.  Appreciate the confirmation that Festool collets work basically the same as others.

I wiggled the collet a little with some needle-nose pliers and it came loose.  Can't tell if I'm missing the o-ring or not in that 8mm collet.  I'll take it to my local Festool dealer on Monday.
