A bit of a dumb question but I have had this router for a couple of years but never used, and don't know how to fit, the black domed inset that goes where the guide rings fit.
Can anyone tell me what it's used for ?

If so, it's to improve the dust collection when routing an edge.

I think Festool Live episode 33 shows how to fit it.

It’s to collect dust when working on edges (chamfers, rabbets, yadda) and it works very well.  1010 is the only one of their routers where you need to unscrew the ring off the bottom center and then you screw the chip collector on.
