OF 1400 Issues

Hi Guys I'm very new here and just signed up to ask some questions.

I own a OF 1400 and needless to say I am a tad disappointed.

I am routing dados using the guide rail system I am usinf my own 2.5 hp shop dust collection system. I do not have or plan to have a mft.

1. the dust collection shroud is installed correctly and it collects zero dust it all spits out from underneath the router and the dado I just cut. 9 Yes my dust system is on and plenty powerfull.

2. accuracy since the tool sits above the work-piece by the depth of the rails  and the guide arrow is 1/16th of an inch wide itself i have not been able to get within 1/16th of exact so far ive cut 5 test dados and the are all of anywhere from 1/16th to even 1/8th in.

3. square. there is no way to "quickly" and accurately insure the workpiece is square to the rails and the router.

4. There is to much play in the guides while adjusting them contributing to the inaccuracy above.

I am not trying to complain I would like some help fixing these issues please.

1st is the dc system low presure or high presure (big colector or shop vac type)
high pressure is needed on those small dc ports

2nd . i think there is a little plastic spacer to level up the base.
can you use the rail attachment on the other side of the rail

3rd. you can measure both ends of the rail and square it to a line

4th . i dont have the guides ,but is there some mechanism to remove the play. if not could you shim the inside of it to remove the play

 
Instead of doing a through dado do a stop dado which will contain the dust in the dado. Go back and cut the last part of the dado and you will have very little dust.

Try sanding the bars a bit for the Guide stop. It is possible the router is slipping down the bars if I understand your issue correctly

As for the dust collection, I don't know if this also aplies to your situation, but with a festool CT or a comparable other brand vac it makes a big difference with the of1400 if you use a 36mm hose instead of a 27mm hose.

As for adjusting the slop out of the railguides, there are adjustmentscrews on the railguides, shown on page 18 of the suplemental owner's manual (They work like the green knobs in the base of the ts saws)

Something's not right.  Mine gets most all of the dust.

2. accuracy since the tool sits above the work-piece by the depth of the rails  and the guide arrow is 1/16th of an inch wide itself i have not been able to get within 1/16th of exact so far ive cut 5 test dados and the are all of anywhere from 1/16th to even 1/8th in. I mark where the edges of the dado should be, then test with the bit itself, rather than the guide arrow.  Use the micro adjuster to get a very precise fit.

Well, that's what the MFT shines at.  If you can't get one, then you will need to use a speed square off the workpiece or attach some sort of a fence to the guide.

4. There is to much play in the guides while adjusting them contributing to the inaccuracy above.
The adjustment screws on the Guide Stop can take out all the play.

I am not trying to complain I would like some help fixing these issues please.

Thank you for the input guys.

Some things I found out,

The kickstand works for keeping the whole thing stable as recommended,
My dust collector is low velocity starting the dado in the middle did cut the dust down, but doing a rabbit it still dint collect all of it,
The Cam screws increased stability.
I figured out the accuracy thing and it was actually simpler then drawing lines etc. For a  1/2 inch dado I added 1/4 inch to where I wanted it say I wanted it 12 inches from my edge, So I went to 12 1/4th  then pulled a tape measure down to the face of the router so it was right in front of the center line on the router then dialed it in using the fine adjustment it was accurate to a point I could not see an error.
as far a squaring the rails I basically did what was recommended and measured.

This is the problem why you don't get good DC. The OF1400 is not meant to work with this type of DC system. You really need a high velocity extractor like a shop vac or a Festool vac.
