OF1010 - Broken Base

I've a like new OF1010 which has only been used to flush trim 3/4" edge banding on my sys cart and 1 shop cabinet.  I was trimming the partition panel for the cabinet and it wasn't cutting flush.  After inspecting the bit, I noticed the bearing was sitting flush on the plywood but cutter was angled upwards.  Inspecting even further I noticed the attachment wasn't square to the base.

I figured I could set the router on it's side and give the bracket a slight push to ensure it's fully seated in the side slot when it crumbled like a Chinese fortune cookie!  Hopefully somebody else will read this in advance of thinking any similar idea and save themselves this headache.

Can anybody recommend where I can find a replacement base?

I believe it is an alloy of aluminium and magnesium.

You can order a new base from Festool directly or through a dealer. I'd give you the part number but Ekat is out of service right now.

But that's quite the push you gave it.

Actually the porosity doesn’t look that bad. Industry acceptance for a non-critical part like this is 5%_8%.

I think the part already had developed a stress riser or two in it from an earlier incident and then it doesn’t take much to put it over the edge.

Aluminum or as Alex noted an aluminum-magnesium alloy. Festool likes using magnesium.

FWIW - It has only been used with this adapter to trim edge banding on 5 shelves and a single cabinet ... it has never been dropped or had any previous incidents.

Thanks for the info, I’ll check with them this week.

I’ve pushed harder on my Incra fence attached with 3D printed brackets so I was quite shocked it crumbled.

I’d send that sucker back,
Depending on how long you’ve owned it , should be covered under the warranty .
At the minimum, the factory will make sure its back together properly .

I actually bought this March 2019 to do the sys cart when the OF1400 was gouging it. Both are like new besides this ... not sure they’d cover this but surely would see it’s never been dropped.

Go on the Festool website and complete a return slip. Let them take a look at both pieces and see what shakes out...the worse they can say is no and you're already in that situation.  [smile]

If you return it tomorrow it'll probably be back by in 7 days depending upon the Christmas mail issues.

I can't imagine that should have broken under any normal use unless there was a defect in the base. I think it should be covered under warranty.  Send it in for warranty repair.

Well, uh, tell that to the aerospace industry.

My caveat was non-critical part...the aerospace industry would be looking for 1% or less or be using a different manufacturing method.

I called them and left a voicemail to avoid sending the entire router back if they really only want the base but maybe they'll want the whole router.  If I have to send the entire unit back maybe I can get them to swap out the metal scale with a metric one.  [big grin]
