Can someone tell me if I can use the rail fine adjuster as a fine adjuster for the side fence as well or do you really have to buy both. It looks like it will work with the fence as long as the bars stick through the router far enough.

I use mine mostly with the fence, but I believe I used it with the edge guide as well.  Like you said, if you've got the rod then all things are equal.

No, the rail fine adjuster will surprisingly NOT work with the edge guide. Why one might wonder? Because the diameter of the fine adjuster is a few millimeters too large so the fine adjuster will touch the surface before the router sole. It's crazy but true...

I was wondering if that would happen, oh well if I have to buy both then I will. I do find it annoying with Festool that they dont include things like a fine adjuster when you buy it. I dont know many other manufacturer that doesnt include a fine adjuster with their routers.

I am more annoyed by the fact that they have made an accessory that in theory could solve two problems but in the end only solves one of them. Really stupid!

That's a little harsh. The 1010 adjuster is superior to those for the other routers, IMO, which makes its existence as a stand-alone justifiable. There are two separate applications here: Using a rail mounted router and using an edge guide. How many brands even bother with the first application? As far as I can tell, this was the first design by Festool to achieve router adjustability on a guiderail and it certainly might not have occurred to them to try for universality. Or, perhaps they purposely chose not to. If the adjuster WAS interchangeable, some amongst us would probably be complaining because they were too CHEAP to inclde a second one with a separate accessory, thereby forcing us to buy BOTH accessories if we wanted to use either ONE.

Hi the fine adjuster can be used with the edge guide if you mount it on the edge guide not the router. I explained how I use it and took pictures for a thread on Talk Festool. ( http://www.talkfestool.com/vb/festool-tools/1306-1010-edge-guide-fine-adjuster.html ) I don't have the pictures on this computer. One thing I forgot to mention in the thread was to mount the adjuster on the rod that locks to the router with the single center bolt. This allows you to extend the rod out further so you don't lose as much adjustment room on the rod. If you look at the pictures you will see that with the adjuster mounted the guide can still go out to the end of the other rod.

Cheers Dongar thats perfect hopefully I should get mine in the post today and I can try it out.

Well my D17 guide bush turned up but not the fine adjuster it seems that the company I bought the two items off on ebay didnt have stock of the fine adjuster even though it was listed on ebay be nice if they had let me know earlier I had to email them today to find out why it wasnt here  >:( >:( >:(. I wouldnt have thought you could sell stuff on ebay if you dont actually have it to sell it but hey what do I know.

Just gotta wait now till they have stock.

got the adjuster this morning it only came with one thumb screw. Which was already fitted through the slotted bit. There was no thumb screw for the hole that fixes it to the 1010's base, i used one of the thumb screws from the router but where the thread is too long it locks the rods when you tighten it through the adjuster and if you loosen it off when you adjust the fine adjuster there is play where the hole in the angle plate is wider than the thumb screw. Should it have come with two thumb screws or am i missing something?....

I think the new thumbscrew is shorter and should be used to connect the adjuster to the base. The old longer t-screw should connect the adjuster to the rod. I am going from memory but I think this is right.

488754 comes with a loose thumb screw and one that is attached.

Tom

Looks like mine has a thumb screw missing , in the festool pic it only shows one but to work it needs two.
Just emailed Festool see what they say.
