OF2200 with CMS: router height adjustment

Dear all,

I just bought the OF2200 router and CMS unit (570251).  Installation went fine, but when I use the height adjuster built into the CMS module to raise the router, it's not possible.  As I screw the height adjuster higher, it puts pressure on the one side of the router and tilts it until it binds.  It seems as though the strength of the springs plus the weight of the router are too much for the one sided screw height adjuster.  I can only raise the router if I use one hand to help it along and turn the handle at the same time.  I can't imagine this being normal; what am I doing wrong?

Thanks for any tips you might have.

Hi

Had exactly the same problem with mine . After lots of messing about Festool UK had to replace the OF2200.The tech people at Festool Germany decided that the problem was to much play in the tolerance around the plunge columns. So i suggest that you get it back to your dealer and ask them to install it in the CMS and get it working, if they can`t, its up to them to provide a working set up. Before you do that just check one thing, that you have fully disengaged the plunge lock on the handle. Don`t give up, when you get it sorted it is a fantastic bit of kit. Hope this helps.

Good suggestion but he's in the US, and thus isn't supposed to have the CMS module. His dealer may not be able to help him, as they will know nothing of the CMS...

PS -John, hope everything's OK with you, you've been very quiet (ie silent!) on here for the last 6 months or so.

Hi Jonny

Did not realise that the US did not have the CMS modules. Only other things I can suggest for hathi2 is to check are the following

Are you using the correct end of the journal plate for the 2200?

Are you locating it in the correct reference hole?

Have you got the correct set up for the 2200 on the spindle rise and fall head?

Don't lubricate the columns as I found it made it worse.

There is a little bit of play in the reference holes, this play is critical , just a bit off and you get this problem.

Have you removed the base plate?

Are you using the correct locating inserts (the green ring) is it located in the base and table properly?

Is the half moon reference bump located properly(green ring)?

Are you just having trouble raising the router? (Does it lower OK?)

Have you got the 3 clamping elements on the correct position on the base?

Have you got the dust shroud locked and retracted during installation? Have you released it once everything is installed?

Is the dust guard sat properly (clear one that comes in the mounting kit)?

That's all i can think of without going into workshop and demounting and remounting it.

Hope some of this helps.

Thanks for the enquiry Jonny, I am good, I am just run off my feet with work.(I`m doing sketch-up drawings for a customer for tomorrow on Easter Monday that's how busy i am.) I drop into FOG most times I look at my mail. I was thinking of trying my hand at doing a tutorial on the CMS with the 2200/1400/1010 and TS75 but not had the time and i think it would challenge my computer and photographic  skills to breaking point.

Regards John

Has anyone apart from me had major problems with sawdust getting into the OF220 when inverted in the CMS? Mine has been back to Festol UK under warranty as the auto unlock mechanism for securing router bits stopped working. Turns out this is a 'design fault' according to the engineer at Festool UK and it has since occurred twice more to me. It is cured by removing the dark blue plate on the underside of the router and vaccuuming but that is irritating. He said Festool knew of the problem and were 'working on it'. Ring any bells for folks with a CMS?

Hi Gasman,

Know exactly what you you are on about. Saw dust gets into the works via the little grills in the blue plate either side of the rocker spindle of the  auto lock mechanism. when there is enough debris in there it stops the ratchet system working. My solution is to blow it out with compressed air.

hi john.

i would love to see a tutorial for the cms on the fog.

i have the cms ts-75, jigsaw and of1400 modules.

i like to think i know how to use them properly, but i am sure i would learn something new if you decided to take a few photos and write a tutorial.

i do like the idea of fitting the wheels to the cms so it can moved easily by one person.

regards, justin.

Thanks to all who wrote with tips!

I spoke to the great people at Festool here in the US on Monday and they dispatched a replacement router which arrived yesterday.  I installed it in the CMS module today and the lift mechanism is working with this one, so it must have been a shaft tolerance issue.

I learned about the CMS system late last year and was disappointed that it wasn't available in the US, though Shane at Festool has indicated that it's just a matter of time.  Impatient as I am, I ordered the CMS extension to the MFT/3 plus the TS-75 module, the router module and the jigsaw module in Germany and had them shipped to the US.  The effort paid off (clearly for Festool as well); I am really enjoying these great tools.

Can you post some pics of the cms setup or using to build some projects?  This is something I am really interested in buying.

Thanks
Bill

yeah i've had that a few times, blow it out with airgun

my 2200 has always been a little sticky when raising it in the CMS module, today i put it in CMS and it refused to raise, looking at router when winding lift mechanism i could clearly see it twisting on shafts, oh boy another design failure, well done Festool, I wonder if they will repair for free if it's a design fault?

Once I learned to lock the dust guard in place the problem went away.

Make sure the post lock is completely disengaged.

Mine works very smoothly. Try a few drops of very light weight oil on the post.

Resurrecting this post as I'm suffering from exactly the same problem described by the original poster.

My OF 1400 has always been fine, but not so long ago I bought the OF 2200 for use in the table and have been setting it up today in anger for the first time. I *cannot* raise the height of the bit with the height adjuster, although lowering it is not a problem. As originally noted, the router simply tips and binds.

Do I really have to send the OF 2200 back to Festool under warranty as a potentially faulty unit, or are there other reasons for this sort of behaviour when using the OF 2200 in the CMS OF that I might be able to resolve myself?

There's a slightly different setup in the raising column between the 1400 and 2200. Could that have anything to do with it?
