So, For the last several weeks I have been talking up a storm around the house how I want to get a Festool 1010 router to do 32mm stuff.  The other day my eldest son called from Afghanistan..Yes, this is his 3rd tour.  And asks, "Dad, what do you want for Christmas"  I said for him to come home in one piece and then said he could pitch in with his brother and get me a Guide rail with the holes in it.  He asked what it was used for and we started talkin etc.

So, today the UPS truck pulls up with this big ole box.  Nope, aint waitin till Christmas  :)  Got ole Festool Bobs return address on it.  HEart starts pumpin pretty quick by now.

Yea, Eldest son went overboard and bought ole POPS here a OF1400 EQ  Waaaaaahhhhhhhhh.  I have to say I'm pretty excited.  Man I miss that Boy !!!!

So, Like I said, I had my heart set on a 1010 but after talking to Bob, I think the 1400 is a little more versatile.  Any opinions?  I will be giving Bob a call in a few days to get the guide rail as well as the other goodies I need for boring those wonderful little holes  :)  Any advice on any other goods one might need for this beast?  I have a few porter cable routers several trim routers so the 1010 seemed like a good idea.  Pretty sure the 1400 is here to stay  :)

Thanks Brad my dear Son

And thank Bob  :)

LabLover,

Such a wonderful story.  You must be so proud of your son.  I know I am not alone when I say how grateful we all are for Brad's service.  We all pray for his and everyone's safe return.

I bet you cannot wait for him to come home so that you can share your wonderful gift with him.

If you're interested in a real nice non-Festool accessory for your new "toy" check out Micro Fence  .  Great products and service, just like Festool.

Fantastic story LabLover. My experience echoes yours to some degree. I was made redundant at the end of June. My wife surprised me with a delivery of a number of Festool prezzies. I won't list them again but look at my signature and you'll see what she bought for me (except the MFT/3 which I bought used on ebay). Of course no amount of wonderful presents will replace the happiness of seeing your son again so enjoy every moment of your reunion. You can complement your Festools at anytime with new items. Enjoy the delight of the gift. Enjoy your family ten-fold more!

Lablover,

Awesome story. You must be a great dad for him to want to show you how much he cares like that. I hope one day my own little boy will be the same sort of caring lad. Although I could do with a Trion for next weekend, so I might ask him to get a move on. Is 6 too young to expect him to make such a gesture?

Will be interested to hear how you find the 1400. I have the 1010 and sometimes wonder if the 1400 would have been the smarter purchase?

Cheers,
Rick

OK Stupid question

Is the 1400 supposed to come with an edge guide?  I have 2 bars in the systainer but no edge
guide.  From what I can tell it's NOT supposed to come with the guide.  I just found it odd that the rods are in there??

You're going to love the 1400. If I had to choose just Festool router it would be the 1400 for its versatility.

And there's another guy from Pittsburgh wishing all the best for your son and the rest of our troops overseas.

I have a 1400 and love it. Plenty of power. Excellent dust control and very versatile.
I also prefer the versatility of collets that can accept up to 1/2" bits - I already had quite a few (especially of those from occasional Woodcraft bit sales for $5 each).

lablover27,

Please extend my thanks to your son for his service.

I am sure you will enjoy the OF1400.  It is a great router.

LabLover,

It sounds like you have a great and brave son.  I hope you enjoy your OF 1400 (it's a great router).  I'm pulling for him and the rest of the troops to come home safe and sound.

Regards,

Dan.

Great story Lablover!  I have the LR32 system and if I were doing it all over again, I'd get the longer rail....or buy both.
PS The rods are also used for the guide rail interface as well as edge guide.  Good stuff!

Thanks for the Tip Jim

Yea, longer guide is a must I think  :)  I was just reading the MFS stuff...WOW, I had no clue!  Pretty impressive stuff for sure.

The 1400 is my go-to router.  Almost always the first one I reach for.  Still have a PC router in the router table, but my other routers just started collecting dust and looking neglected, so I found a better home for them on Craigslist.

The MFS is awesome.

Take a look at the threads that discuss levelling the 1400 with the guide rail.  Festool makes an auxiliary foot that's thick enough to even it out, or its easy to make your own.  The outrigger thingy that comes with it is pretty lame.

Hey Lablover,
Thank you son for his service and thanks for sharing your great story. A year ago when I purchased my Kapex I took my grandson with me. The salesman told him Grandpa had just bought him a really nice saw! I have a number of their tools and very much enjoy using each one.

Do you have the plunge saw yet (TS55 or TS75)?  Same great dust collection.  I cut 5 sheets of MDF into finished pieces and wound up with about two tablespoons of dust on the floor.  That saw and vac paid for itself in no time at all.
