I have been looking at the open frame wide belt sanders for some time now, (see links below), and am curious as to whether anyone here has experience with them. Aside from the stock width limitations (not too much of an issue for me), I am wondering whether they have problem with sanding uniformity across the panel. A few machines have platens (like the big boys), but I wonder whether that is necessary for these smaller machines. It would seem to be beneficial, but what is the sanding quality without the platen?
