Open Joint

I’m trying to make octangular containers out of white oak with dark trim top and bottom. I can get a nearly perfect cut on the white oak sides (8” high and 3” wide).

The dark wood bases have a 1/8” reveal so they are made in a separate operation. I can get them almost perfect, but still getting a small gap on a few joints.

Very frustrating.

Pic would help, but, could you make the trim like you do the body and slice pieces off to size?

I’m thinking of glueing the trim to the oak before cutting the side pieces.
