I've been asked to make a couple of panel doors by a family member.  I have domino 500, so my question is will the largest domino for the 500 be sufficient or will I have to purchase the 700?

If I get the 700 what would be the appropriate domino size?
The door will be standard thickness and size.

It depends on the thickness of the stock you are using.  Several years ago, there was a thread around here someplace with doors made by Eiji Fuller with the DF500 (I think w/8/4+ stock).  He used four dominos - in 2x2 pattern for joining the rails & stiles.  That would be a very strong joint.  The only advantage the DF700 might offer is that the tenons would be longer than any available for the DF500.  I would think the longer tenons would make a stronger, more durable joint, especially with people slamming a door around.

If by standard thickness and size your referring to a door that's nominally 3/4" thick and 2' by 3' in width and height, then a Domino 500 would be sufficient.

I have both Domino's and I don't use my 700 unless the material thickness get to be 1 3/4" or more.

The door thickness will be 1 1/4" and door size 2' 6" wide and 6' 6'' tall.
The intention would be tom use 4 domino's evenly spaced per joint.

I really would like the 700 but being a hobbyist its hard to justify for just this job.
I guess I could go back to the traditional mortise and tenon joint, but I do like using my festools.

Thanks for the reply's guys, I'll use the 500 and see how I get on.

Waka, where have you been hiding? I miss your WIP's.

I've only done doors a couple of times, but both times used titebond 3 and the 10mm dominos and they've held up fine, one set of doors is about 3 years old and going fine and the other only a month or so.

There is no reason you couldn't peg a 10mm domino with a 5mm dowel is there really for extra strength?

Thanks Chems

I've been around, mainly browsing . Are you doing SS on the other forum?

I have not made any large doors, but i have done a couple of sets of table legs using loose tennons.  I just made up tennon stock and drilled out the mortices to fit. I do intend to eventually get a domino and expect to use it a lot more and not have to make my own tennons and will eliminate a lot of setup time.

You'll not be disappointed with either of the domino's although I can only testify to the 500.
