Hands up if you've ever lacked a bit of patience on a project .. only to botch it up or take longer fixing the very thing you were trying to do faster [embarassed]

In my IT work I'm the father of calm and thinking, but for some reason this typically doesn't translate into the stuff that's DIY/Hobby ... until today. Today I had a moment where I just put the brakes on and said "STOP, DO NOT SAND THE WOOD FILLER THAT IS PROBABLY STILL NOT DRY, do it tomorrow - do something else now".

Yes .. I'm still itching to sand the darn thing and it's probably going to keep me awake thinking about it, but at least I've grown a little [smile]

I'ts amazing how we often don't do what we preach and also ignore what we know.

Yeah I'm exactly the same. I hate waiting for things to dry and always have to fight the urge to chance it a bit too soon, sometimes I fail and end up creating more work for myself. I made a prop for a kid's birthday party not so long ago that required a few components be spray painted and impatience/looming deadline panic got the better of me; applying the top coat of lacquer too soon and too liberally and ended up getting runs in the sub coat.

ahah ya check outhttp://makingitpodcast.com/. bob, jimmy and david talk about this stuff all the time. I love jimmy and bobs versatility with materials and skills and not just your typical wood working.

I actually really like the idea of Patience in at lot of areas. I think thats one of the main pleasures of doing handiwork of any kind, and gives the whole process a zen like quality.. Too bad there's something called a deadline, and that other thing called budget overruns..

Ive messed up a lot of projects trying to hurry it along. Wasn't the first time won't be the last.  Maybe one day....

I find that having more than one project in progress helps me.  While one project dries I turn my full attention to the other...

Glue ups. I always tried to skip the dry run. If I learned anything in building furniture, it's skip the shortcuts. A dry run is good for anything in life. Most of all a glue up.

Too bad I didn't think of the dry run thing BEFORE I got married...

Honestly, honey, I was just kidding...  [scared]

LOL Kev you should see me when the internet goes down, I am anything but calm. in my line of work it's all about how you get over problems when things go wrong or when the customer changes there mine half way through a job.

And yet at night.... It's whispering to you as you toss and turn, trying to sleep. 'Sand me Kev, I swear I'm dry enough...'  " I won't ruin your relationship like those other Fillers did"... [poke] [poke] [poke]
Personally Kev, if your Wood Filler is calling you, I'd throw it out as it's obviously gone bad on the shelf... [wink]

I used to have a coffe cup that said "God grant me patience - and I want it right now!!"  [big grin]

I think the need for patience in real woodworking is what drives a lot of people to turning.  [huh]

I love that stuff, I own multiple colors/cans of it. Once you get used to the smell of it, you're off and running. I think it's a clay based filler, so that might account for the unique smell.  [thumbs up]

Today my patience has been stretched by spending what seems like half the hours looking for my bloody pencil! I swear the things grow legs when you're not looking.

I set pencils all over the shop, a couple on all 4 sides of my MFT, I still can't find them half the time
