Pdc 18/4 on smoke

Hello Gentlemen,
Today i worked on some tables a my new PDC get on smoke. I predrilled 10mm hole for 12x300mm screw and then the Pdc smoked.
Have You any ideas where is the problem?
Overheating control didnt work?

I don't know about the PDC but my new OF1400 router produced a noticeable amount of smoke each time I stopped it - but it stopped happening after a dozen or so prolonged runs.

Was there any smell? I have smoked a C15/T15 (can't recall which one it was as it was a few years ago) and the smoke was had a very "toxic smell" and something literally fried inside of the drill. After it cooled down I pulled the trigger and it started smoking again...  [eek]  It was replaced.

Given the amount of built in protection I would hand the drill in for service/inspection. They aren't supposed to smoke.

My machine was not "stressed" with drilling a large hole or driving a larger screw. It simply started smoking while removing some door frame screws that weren't bogging the machine down any.

Yes, bright + toxic smell and deep fog. My drill works, but when i drill some holes, than drill warms up.

My TS55 slowing down, when its overheat, but PDC - nothing.

I can see that you are overseas.  Smoke coming out of a tool is not normal and you should contact your local Festool service center.  Unfortunately I don't have any contact information to pass along for your area.

This was my router on the first few runs - I was quite surprised and a bit concerned to begin with but it soon stopped and is fine now.  In the old days I would have put it down to the new brushes bedding in.

Send it in. Its a PDC. Still the only thing Festool I sent back during my 30 days.They even tried to fix mine 4 times and sent me another one. Still did the same thing.

So my pdc was burned up. Service take care of my drill. I have:
new case(body),
gearbox,
some screws

Whole Service 7days with weekend.  Nice job!

Today my PDC broke again. This drill is toy. Worst tool I ever had. More time in service than on jobsite.

Problem with gear box, leaking gearbox, overheating. So I am sending it to service.

There's more than one reason a tool might start smoking.

The stator or rotor can "fry" burning or melting the insulation, or melting the wire on either. In this case one or both parts might have to be replaced.

Some other electricsl component might also overheat, or short out, including the switch, an electrical modile like the speed control, or something more basic like a fuse.

Another reason a power tool might smoke is if grease leaks out of a tools gear case or "sealed" bearings, and comes into contact with part of the tool that might be very hot, like the motor windings. While grease isn't supposed to leak into other areas of the tool, in my experienceit's not uncommon. The oil can separate out of the grease if a tool isn't used frequently enough. Grease can also separate if a tool is subjected to temperatures that are too high, or possibly too low. If you add in a motor that has been running continuously, or which has a lower voltage, and therefore runs hotter, leaking grease can start smoking if even a tiny smount gets on the motor.

And sorry, but when i am screwing 10x250 screw (predrilled 8mm hole) and this drill smokes.
And when iam mixing water based warnish only 5l in bottle with this drill - 4 gear and this drill going extremly hot... than this drill is junk, crap...

Having used the PDC on the Festool truck while playing with the Zobo drill bits, I can say that the proper choice of gear and torque adjustment ist crucial for using the PDC.

I have used my PDC to build a rather large playground and had zero issues. I probably drilled about 200 holes with a ¾" bit, put them together with lags and Spax screws AND had the drill fall 1.5 stories 3 times and it did wonders.

I completely disagree with the "toy" aspect you used and maybe you have a bad driver. I love my PDC and have not babied it at all.

Every time I have a new tool, I am reading manual. I used drill very lightly - few holes, few screws.

I am surprised that the max torque is only 12.5 Nm.
My little 10v drill has 34 in low speed and 17in high speed.

I know some ski professionals and they use dewalts with big 1-1/2" augers to put bamboo or race gates into snow and ice.
Occasionally the chuck will break of fall off.
One often sees them drilling with the machine against their boot so when it catches in the ice it is doesn't break their wrist.

Hi!

You're misinterpreting the table/numbers. The PDC has a max. torque of 40 Nm for soft screw-joints and 60 Nm for hard screw-joints. Max. torque is only applied when the torque switch/selector is in "drilling mode" (far left or far right) - if you choose one of the 12 settings in-between the numbers from the table apply, of course depending on which gear you have chosen.

Meaning: if you set the PDC to "drilling mode" in gear "one" you got the 40/60 Nm - If you choose torque setting 1 you apply a max. of 0.75 Nm if you choose 12 you apply a max. torque of 12 Nm.

PDC is little computer drill )) Everything is calculated, measured. So I think overheating is fail and with this electronic things should be impossible to break this drill.
But I am not alone who send burned PDC+gearbox to service.
