Please tell me this is a joke: How to use a hand plane

here in england

we have english people

who are WAY more stupid than this  ::)

and.......... they dont need tee shirts to proove it

He is not the greatest woodworker buy I amazed what he accomplish.  Kudos to him  ;D

This post is his original post at lumberjocks, take a look:

"

i just started woodworking 2 years ago I lived in brooklyn ny for 10 years at van dyke a project in brownsville. I got into woodworking after my dad made me work with him one day my mom died when I was 2 so I dont really talk about that very much so I live with my step mom and my dad I still work with him. He runs viennas construction co. He was and alaskan crab fisherman for 20 years until 1998 when my mom died. He took over the company from my grandfather who was a fisherman for 40 years. The company has been around since 1940 when my grandfather immagrated from greece to new york. When I lived in brooklyn I would get in trouble with the police all the time. I know most of the cops in the 73 precinct and the 75 prcinct 73 being brownsville and 75 being new lots or east new york. Last year 2 of my homeboys died bobby asson and erick scantelli so they were each 17 when they got hit up so I needed something to do so I would end up like them so I started woodworking when I didnt have anything else to do instead of doing stuff I cant talk about so nothing really scares me anymore which is the reason that I never wear saftey glasses. In the summer when im not in school im in alaska or maine working on a family boat my step moms family is lobster fisherman and by dads family including him are alaskan crab fisherman. I usually work on the F/V clycone which fishes brown red golden king crab, opilio crab, tanner crab, and she is a tender in the summer which means she buys the catch from the gillnetters and and delivers the salmon to the canneries. I am a third generation fisherman and I will probably all year round when im 18.

Mattfc, Jmbfestool, PeterK, Brice Burell, Greg R;   Gents, you may wish to consider removing your posts made before knowing this guy's situation.

Mr Swenson,  the guy in the video deserves a lot more respect from someone who has demonstrated a distinct lack of maturity in the past. At least he is having a go; wobbly bench and vice notwithstanding.  He's not lobbing abusive pictures and emails around when someone offended him.

Have a nice smug week.

This kid, altho not showing the very greatest of technical skills, nor command of the English language with is writing, is definitely going to make something of himself.  I got curious and searched thru his website.  He is evidently supporting his desire for building up a workshop and collection of tools by building an informative website.  He is not affraid to represent himself as he is learning along the way.  Instead of sitting in front of the "boob toob" with a blank mind and fathomless mentality, he is putting the "toob" to work and making it work for him.  i did not look at everything he has to offer.  i cringed at some of his "demos",  certainly not on a level with John Lucas, but the kid has an imagination and he does have ideas.  He will go far.

he comes from a long line of fishermen, he is proud of his heritage and he is out there demonstrating in a very positive and productive way, while so many of his peers are out there demonstrating to tear down all that has been given to them. My hat is off to him.
Tinker

Yes that may be Tinker he looks like a go getter, but if the kid gets killed or seriously injured it is all for not.

How can anyone use a plane without making sure there is no wiggle in the vise holding the wood. It's A recipe for disaster. At least a video game can not cut off someones finger or literally kill them on the spot.

The kid needs to take some classes on safety and really follow them. I sure do not want any of my 6 kids following a bunch of his procedures, thats for sure.

At that age we are invincible or at least we think so. He is going to look back at these vids when he is 30 or 40 and probably crap his pants.

I know what it's like to grow up in a bad situation (although I don't have his experience with law enforcement) like this young man and I wish him all the best. That said, he is not a role model I'd want young people to follow. What he shows in his videos can be dangerous, the fact he is overcoming a tough past doesn't change that fact. He is unaware of his ignorance, that can be very dangerous to himself and anyone learning from him videos. I hope he goes to vocational school, most high schools have programs to allow kids to get an early start at the training of their choice.

Wasn't feeling smug at all, and regardless of the gentlemans background I am willing to call a spade a spade, being unsafe is just that, whether life has been tough on you or not. Given that others can watch this video with the intent of learning something (that is how I found it), I honestly thought it was a bit of joke against health and safety (chiseling towards yourself, using a loose mounted metalworkers vice with sharp implements).

I wish him all the best, and good on him he is taking responsibility for his life and doing something positive.

Perhaps we as the members of this forum should take him under a collective wing.  He has drive and a willingness to put what he knows out to others.  Imagine episode 498 if we supported and helped him become the craftsman that it is clear he wants to be.

Thanks Craig

Thanks Craig

Any guidance that anyone could give him would be good, looking at his web site it looked like he came close to losing a couple of digits with his miter saw.

I just posted a comment to him linking this discussion thread, and inviting him to join up. i find that for an 18 yr old to be trying his hand at woodworking, writing, filming, editing, finding sponsors...  is a great thing.
Craig

My kid would not take this kind of offer as anything good. Don't you know that a teenager is always right, kind of like a wife. He may just say F.O. and he did not ask for our help. I am just saying he may have a negative response. I might if someone looked at my stuff and tried to tell me I was completely wrong in what I was doing. This thread is not really a complimentary thing at all.

Craig

Well, I'd be happy to offer any help I can to him.
