Hey everybody.

A few weeks ago Ron Wenner at Seneca Woodworking reached out to me about some feedback on the FOG for a potential customer looking at the standard "package" of:
  • the RTS-500 cutter adapter
  • the Domi-Shims for the XL 700 (1/2" and 3/4")
  • and sometimes the Imperial Fence Height Gauge for the XL

My feedback on the thread was 99.9% positive and the only negative I had was "If you are working with 1/2" and 3/4" materials, switching Domi-Shims can get a bit repetitive."  Ron and I chatted a bit and I told him that i had grand plans involving some rare earth magnets and some sweat induced tapping of my fence and he let me know about this little gem coming soon.  Needless to say, he send me a pre-release version of it to test (for them and me) and here is what I can say...

This setup is WAY better than what I was going to venture in to doing on my own.  They are releasing an Imperial Thickness Gauge for the Domino XL.  It works in combination with the 1/2" Domi-Shim (the thicker of the two) and allows you to pick your material size on the gauge and your mortice ends up near center.  I say near center because as we all know, not all sheet material is exactly the size they say it is.  Personally I found this to be a + as I am in the school of thought that you do not want the domino directly in the center as it is easy to lose your reference side and can be troublesome later (dry fit to glue up).

The Thickness Gauge has 5 standard settings:
  • 1/2"
  • 5/8"
  • 3/4"
  • 7/8"
  • 1"

This covers most "standard" sizes that you would work with and honestly if you have any other sizes that are standard, they probably are close enough to these that while it wont be centered, it will be more than close enough to accomplish what you need.  A picture is worth 1,000 words so here are my (initial) 4,000 words.

Domi-Shim plate to use (the 1/2" one which is the thicker one):

Story Stick I created and marked up on one test with 6mm bit.  It shows the material thickness as well as the centerline of the material (not the centerline of the mortice):

Final thoughts:

As I said above, I really like this setup.  I don't have to swap the plates when working with mixed materials which saves time because as we all know, even if you have a really solid workflow, there is always going to be that one little things you forgot... It also is simple.  I assume for people with the Domi-Shims, this will be a simple addition and I can imagine that they will "kit" this with a plate(s) for new customers.  It works well and it is simple which are a great combination.

I think this will cover most of us who use our 700 with the bit adapter and on sheet goods.  I think the only ones it won't appeal to would be someone who is looking to bore direct center of the workpiece.  Again, I prefer it that way as it doesn't lose any stregnth but gains ease of alignment.

End of review jargon:

I was approached by Seneca Woodworking to test out a pre-release version of this.  I am not aware of their release date on it nor the price.  The schematics of the gauge may be altered before going into full production.  I was not compensated for this review other than  receiving the test unit for feedback to them.  I already owned the Domi-Shims and use them quite often.  In fact, the only thing really changing now is that my 1/2" plate will be attached more often than my 3/4" plate.  [tongue]

If you have any questions about my experience with it, feel free to reply to this thread or PM me.  If you have anything for Ron and Ryan... email them at info@senecawoodworking.com.

Cheers.  Bryan.

Excellent write-up!

Even though I don't own the 700XL - yet - I await this with great anticipation. Seems like a great addition to the Domino XL, depending upon price of course?

Nice add on for us who work in inches. Now I just need a Domino XL  [big grin]

Nice setup and one that I would buy if I worked a lot with sheet goods.  I do have the Plate for my DF500 and that works great with 1/2 and 3/4" plywood.

I think I need to get the Imperial height sets for both of my Dominos.

Jack

I am more of a metric guy but I know the fact that this is Imperial will go a long way on this side of the pond.  I do wish there was a metric version... perhaps I will give that feedback to Ron  [scratch chin].

A few people have asked to have a side by side of the two gauges (stock and Seneca's) and I will get that when i am back home later today.

Cheers.  Bryan.

[member=21412]bkharman[/member] I like the adaptor on the Kerg autoMax clamp. Where can I get one?

Hey Greg,

That is a Precision Dogs Clamp Plate.  I really like them.  They work with every type out there (Bessey, Kreg, etc.)  They have  a4 bolt on top and two through bolts centered.  Also the dog is removable and threaded on both sides so you can put a knob underneath.

Find them here:  http://precisiondogs.us/products/precision-clamp-mount

Precision Clamp Mount

DO they hold down with out using the locking knob from below the table?

they will... they do lift a little, but it will do in a pinch.  I was thinking that it would be nice to have a longer dog post to accomplish that.  Right now it is flush to the bottom for knob attachment.

OK I will prove my ignorance.  I have the 700 and the Imperial Stop.  Why do you need to shims if you have the stops.

Thanks in advance

Bill

The minimum fence offset to bit centerline on the 700 is too great for 1/2" material and barely within bounds of 3/4" material IIRC.

I'll buy that.  I have used it on 3/4" but noticed that the mortice was not on center.  I assumed this was a "feature" to help alignment.

I'm very happy with all my Seneca products...I guess my question is why it took so long for this to come out.  At the time the other height gauges for the 700 were introduced (Jan 2014), it seemed it would be a trivial effort to add this gauge to eliminate the need for both Domishims.  I'm thinking the new "kit" will cost more than the shims (the shims cost $70 for both and the height gauge will likely be in the $55 range, for a kit cost of around $80-90 I'd guess).

FYI...

Ryan emailed me that this item is now for sale on their site!  You can find it at: http://www.senecawoodworking.com/products/imperial-thickness-gauge-domishim-for-festool-domino-xl-df700

Cheers.  Bryan.

PS - I have used this for 2 projects now nad really like it.  One of the projects had a good mix of 12mm and 18mm ply.  Was very nice to not have to switch plates and just move to the right thickness.

Would be cool if they offered a trade-in program like they have for the Domiplate (i.e., send in one of your no-longer-necessary Domishims and get a $20 credit toward the price of a height gauge).

Looks good and I love all my Seneca products. But being a hobbyist, not sure I can justify the $54.95 for the gauge alone. (I do have both domiplates)

I hear ya. I also have both plates and I do love not having to take them off and on all of the time now!  If you don't want to swing the 55 bucks, you could always explore where I was headed before which was to tap some holes in the fence and plates to put in some rare earth magnets for attaching and detaching.

Cheers. Bryan.

Looks like a great deal if I could only convince myself that since I already own the DF500 with the Domiplate (which is excellent) why would I need that same capability on my DF700?

I just bought the 6mm cutter for my DF700 which I think is a great accessory for thru mortise and tenon work and if I sit here thinking about the above package deal with the Imperial step gauss I just might convince myself to buy the package [wink]

I know most joints using M&T are hidden so if the tenon is a little off center it doesn't matter but I don't see offset being a feature. I have a use where the tenons will be visible, therefore, I would like the mortise to be perfectly centered in the board. Using my 0.753" milled hardwood I find the mortise to be off center about 0.015" making the thickness to one side of the tenon 0.030" thicker than the other - easily visible.

I have a message into Seneca and hopefully there is an easy fix other than adding a shim to the fence stop. For the cash laid out and CNC machining for this accessory it should center the mortise.
