Made for my fiancee Serena. I put a lot of time into this one. It's the first project that I am really actually proud of, if that make any sense.

It's not perfect but I learned a ton.

It was also my first time using a router (just bought the OF 1400 for this project).

- The main carcass is Ribbon Stripe Sapele
- The bottom is a rabbeted in piece of brazilian cherry - very strong and heavy wood! fun to work with
- The top is ribbon stripe sapele as well, with the panel being canary wood - gorgeous gorgeous wood
- I messed up the bottom of the canary wood so decided to route out a 1/4" stopped dado and do an Indian Rosewood inlay to "fix" it....I actually like it!
- Solid brass hinges, feet, and placard

A few coats of Deft spray lacquer and she's done!

Took me about 1.5 weeks, 3-5 hours a day plus or minus.

Matt

Nice job!  I'm sure she will love it!  And congrats on the engagement.

Your work is showing continuous improvement with every project!

A couple of thoughts on improvements -

- Ribbon sapele is one of my favorite woods.  Cut your pieces for the sides out of one length of board so the grain wraps around the box - you'll have one that doesn't match for a back corner, but the detail from the side is a nice technique for continuous grain around the box

- Miter the inside top strips that hold the inset panel in place.  Small detail but easy to do.  Or better still, use your router and capture the full top panel and use 'space balls' to let it float. https://www.widgetco.com/space-balls

Can you share some more detail on the hinges?  I have never seen them but like the idea of them supporting the top.

Thanks for sharing, Matt!    Oh, and when's the wedding!?  With gifts like these I'm sure she's a supporter of you buying tools.

Nicely done Matt!  You're just cranking these projects out lately!

Nice!  I made my fiance a candleholder back in the day, and we've been using it now for 45 years.

WRT the strip of rosewood, a great many of my projects have "features" that started out as mistakes.  The better you get at featurizing mistakes, the better woodworker you'll be.

Did you make the insert or buy it?  If you made it, how?  If you bought it, where?

[member=167]neilc[/member] thanks for the kind words man!!

The improvements you listed absolutely I agree with. Half of it was I ran out of time (we had to fly up to her parents house and I decided to bring it, so she can open it on Christmas eve).

The other half... the project took me a while and I was ready to be done (for example, with the cherry velvet risers - totally should have mitered. Just figured it would be seen rarely and was ready to be done with it haha).

The wedding is May 15 next year! Thanks for asking!

[member=2098]Michael[/member] thank you!!

[member=21249]RKA[/member] thanks man!!

[member=61231]HarveyWildes[/member] thanks! Yes I am figuring that out now. I'll try to make more mistakes ;)

I bought the insert. Haven't tried anything like it and this one looked really nice.

It's this one (in green obviously):https://www.rockler.com/jewelry-box-insert-trays
