Matt your legs are fine, what others are missing is that the grain in the curly maple usually runs about 90 degrees to the curl.
It is not curly maple. It's regular cherry with grain direction perpendicular to the length.
Legs might be fine now, but over time checks on the end grain may develop. It's inconsequential for parts with longitudinal grain direction, yet could result in failure in this case.
When I decide to invest my time to build a custom piece I think beyond now or this purpose or even this climate. Who knows where the piece will end up in 10 - 20 years, what will sit on it, who will lean against it or move it.
Well dip me in tar and cover me with feathers Svar you are right and I f---ked up big time with my assumption of curly maple. Should have actually read the whole thread instead of having a senior moment. That does have the potential for failure especially with the stress induced from the dominos.
