[Project 33] Walnut and Cherry TV stand

Good to hear that some more are a bit sceptical to superglue everything  [wink]
Although, hunting the right glue for the job isn’t always straightforward.

Looking forward to see what kind of solution you came up with!  [smile]

Matt your legs are fine, what others are missing is that the grain in the curly maple usually runs about 90 degrees to the curl.
It is not curly maple. It's regular cherry with grain direction perpendicular to the length.

Legs might be fine now, but over time checks on the end grain may develop. It's inconsequential for parts with longitudinal grain direction, yet could result in failure in this case.

When I decide to invest my time to build a custom piece I think beyond now or this purpose or even this climate. Who knows where the piece will end up in 10 - 20 years, what will sit on it, who will lean against it or move it.

This piece is going to be stunning when it’s done Matt. Really nice work.

Well dip me in tar and cover me with feathers Svar you are right and I f---ked up big time with my assumption of curly maple. Should have actually read the whole thread instead of having a senior moment. That does have the potential for failure especially with the stress induced from the dominos.

Hey team,

This project is still underway! Long story short ... I've had some serious problems with FedEx.

I ordered 20 b.f. of walnut and 20 b.f. of cherry on May 8 as I was out - it still hasn't come. It's a long story, but FedEx has either lost it or is totally backed up.

Woodworkerssource.com sent me more (they are great) free of charge, but that still hasn't come either and surprised the ETA from FedEx. I think they're backed up on big packages.

Anyways my wife and I drove to the distribution center where it's being held and they were able to find 1 out of the 4 packages (at this point there is 40 b.f. of both walnut and cherry, across 4 packages (20 bf each) in their distribution center).

The other 3 packages are still nowhere to be seen. Anyways - this one was cherry so I made up the back panel and 4 shelves with it. Getting closer ...

Hopefully more pics when I can get more wood -out again.

Matt

I had a simular issue with USP. Bought a conturo, never arrived, called the dealer they got a hold of UPS who said they lost it for the dealer to put in a claim. The tracking showed it arrived at their distribution center about 40 mins from my house. So I drove out there and they had it on a trailer marked on Hold. No reason why just on hold stored in a trailer and ready to be shipped back.
Anyway I got it from them there. Still no explanation as to why they had it on hold.

[member=10147]jobsworth[/member] glad to hear that it is not only me!

OK well team as of last night, I have ALL the pieces cut and sanded for the cabinet - except the middle divider (out of wood again).

Tonight I am going to start on the joinery so should have some "more exciting" pictures soon with dry fits and mock ups!

Matt

Matt, I have followed most of your projects posted on here.  I really enjoy everything you do along with all the advice given by others during the build.  Seeing that you get most of your wood online I hope you think about a post on how you do your “Panel build up” process. Keep up the good work and looking forward to all your future projects.

[member=66813]rmhinden[/member] thank you sir!

Hey Matt

1.  I like the inlay on the doors
2. Clean, well-organized shop  [smile]
3. I wish I could borrow your shop cat to track down the little critters that sneak into my garage shop  [big grin]

I have also  had a few head scratching moments with UPS/Fedex.  [eek]

Is your back panel solid ~ 20 mm wood? How is it attached? Floating in a groove?

Very clean and tidy cabinet. If that's all solid wood I hope you've allowed for a bit of movement as there's some wide boards in there.

It looks like the feet have the grain running horizontal to the floor... I'd worry about them snapping or splitting when someone shoves the cabinet...

1) Thanks!
2) Thanks again!
3) hahahah. I had to look again - I didn't know she snuck into the pic!!

[member=15585]Svar[/member] it is solid Cherry, yes. This whole build is solid wood - no plywood and no metal fasteners. It is domino'd in to the top, bottom, and sides with 3 dominos per. I know the traditional comment applies about wood movement - trust me, if I've learned anything from this forum, it is that. I haven't had a problem with pieces inside an air conditioned / heated home (in California, not humid at all) so I didn't account for it. I am building this piece for free for a good friend of mine, so there is no "client" if it does break. It's all just for fun for me.

[member=53696]Roachmill[/member] Thank you! See comment above and please do not shoot or otherwise harm me :)

With regard to the feet -go to page 1, we had a whole discussion on it :)

[member=2912]Don T[/member] thanks!!

Matt

It looks great Matt!  I love the legs with the horizontal grain.  You have a nice design sense, very clean and modern with subtle details that really look great.

Looks great!

Looking forward seeing the front!
Cherry is quite rear here, but we had once cherry flooring - I loved the warmth and the look of it - we did have a lot of positive comments about it too, as the “standard” flooring here is oak, which is nice but the warmth and play in cherry is special.
