[Project 46] Walnut & Maple Coffee Table

Hey team!

So this is for some friends. I am trying to be fancier with curves to push myself a bit.

It's a Walnut coffee table that will have some Maple accents. The top will come up and out so they can eat at it, and it'll have some frame & panel ends with curved drawers on the long side.

I spent too long trying to figure out how to cut a slot into the curved top stile to accept the inside maple panel but then decided to rabbet it instead to give the appearance it has a slot. The sides and bottom have the slot that holds the panel. It turned out good.

This coming weekend I'll work on it some more.

Looks great Matt. Yes I would have used a rabbet bit too. Simplest solution I think.

What caused the confusion/concern about the dado in the curved piece?  Did you use a plunge bit on the flat pieces?

The rabbet definitely worked.  Knowing my penchant for buying new tools that I'll never use again, I would probably have sought out a narrow rabbeting bit or some sort of rail/stile bit set with a bearing or a bit and a template guide.

[member=75217]squall_line[/member] I think it'd be a groove or slot instead of a dado since it runs with the grain not orthogonal to it but obviously that's just nomenclature. The issue with using a plunge bit here like a straight bit, is because the curve is concave instead of convex, if you use a router table or router with a flat base, you can't really get the bit into the material the full 1/4" in the middle because of the curve. I did the straight pieces with a 1/4" spiral bit on the router table, yes. I did look at rail/stile bits - I found some good ones - but nothing with a bearing on it. Bitsbits had some without bearing but of course I can't use the fence.

Anyways the rabbet worked out OK.

This past weekend I worked on some of the longer stretchers that connect the ends together and also cut the bottom to size.

Next up is figuring out how to mount the lift top thing for the table top, somehow it'll need to be mounted to those top curved stretchers.

For future reference, consider a slot cutting bit. Vary the depth of the slot by changing the bearing size. Then the work is placed flat on the table.

The blue ribbed hose is Anti-static 4" ducting from Rockler.
