I'm building a coffee table with internal storage accessed via opening up the top as a box lid, with the two halves of the top pivoting off a fixed batten running down the center (pieces still have to be cut down to final size).

I've never used the SOSS before, but it seems like they'd be perfect for this application to provide a completely concealed hinge.  My question is what would the appropriate model be.  First is the choice of barrel vs. the regular leaf hinge.  I know the barrel hinges are not recommended for vertical or load bearing applications -- the top is going to be around 1 1/2", but the material is reclaimed softwood (cant' tell if it's pine or spruce), so it's relatively light for that thickness.  I will also be installing lid stays to hold up the lids when opened and provide a soft close.

If instead I go with the leaf hinge, I'm wondering what size, either the one made for 1 3/8 min. thickness (I think the leaves are 4 5/8 tall), or if I can go one smaller for the ones for 1 1/8 minimum thickness (3 3/4 leaf height).  The reason I might consider going slightly smaller is because the reclaimed lumber has some splitting in a few spots, so I'm worried about having too thin of a wall between the hinge and the edge of the board.
