Raised Panels

I have some 11" wide door panels to make. I need to edge join boards to get the width. I can do two boards wide but was thinking three would be more aesthetically pleasing. What do you think?

I'm assuming it's going to be a natural finish, with the wood being the focus?

Thanks for the responses. I’m using red oak with “natural” stain.

Was looking at the many kitchen doors I did for our kitchen years ago and doesn’t seem I followed any rules strictly.

That's right on the border. Hitting exactly 11" is not so easy. A couple of pieces from a 1x6, just barely makes it, and that doesn't account for loss from the jointer. Bumping up to 1x8 does it, but then leaves you with some fairly small drop, unless you can use it for your rails/styles (or face frames)
3 pieces of a 1x4 won't get it either. 11" is just that sweet spot

Get 8/4 lumber at least 5.75” wide, resaw and glue up to create a book match.

I’m lucky to have a hardwood supplier close to me. The rough sawn boards I got were about 8-1/2” wide. I was drooling when I went down the S4S isle and found a nice 12” wide x 6’ long board but it was almost $11/bf!

I generally assume that most are not using rough lumber. That may not be totally fair, but just how I see it.
Then there is jointer size. I would guess that there are more 6" jointers out there than larger ones, especially in the home/hobbyist market. (Especially in the US)
Sure, there is a work-around to do it with a planer/thicknesser, but that really works best with shorter pieces.

It is nice to have access to timber like that, but it usually means living in a large city. Fortunately for me, I do have both lumber suppliers and a couple of local sawmills. One of them will even cut the timber that I supply.

I'm in the Chicago area and remember years ago through another forum there use to be about three or four lumber runs a year from Indiana and Michigan. Forum users would sponsor the events at their house. That rough sawn lumber gave you enough thickness to work with and was priced right. What I get today is maybe 1/16" oversize - barely enough to get a pass per side through the planer.

Why not make them in one piece and use crown-cut veneer instead?

This is an excellent opportunity to add a drum sander to your tool arsenal. I have the Laguna 16-32 SuperMax and it does a wonderful job of removing material that is not practical with the planer.

+1 for a drum sander! Next to the CNC that's by far the best ROI for me, and I use it far more than I ever expected possible. I keep a roll of 40grit on it in-between jobs and do loads of thickness sanding. Incredibly useful machine.
