Ram Promaster Van Racking Project

Looks good Madmaguire!  Very functional.  It's amazing how much more enjoyable work can be using amazing tools and being
organized.

While those vans look like icecream trucks from space, they are the most practical and thereby perfect for what we do. Whats ugly to me is cabinetmakers in giant 4x4 pick-up trucks who only drive in the city. I can't tell you how many people have tried to talk me into one of those. "But my tools are exposed", "put a cap on it", " then its just a less practical van that sucks gas"......"oh ya..."
Pick up trucks to me is a waste. It's so hard to work out of it.Plus you need to spend more money for a cap/bed slide.Vans are more practical but the American van design is also a pain.
You still have to get on your knees to get to your stuff. Those high top euro van are the bomb!!And I don't think they're ugly,i think they are neat looking.
This Dodge ram promaster is really a FIAT van
I'm going to wait for the Transite (Ford) to see what is all about before I do anything.

Very nice set up I just got rid of my truck with topper and bed slide and got a 10' box van. Getting ready to set up the back almost like yours do the systainers stay on the shelves good when driving. I was going to use Miller dowels but had thought about what you did with the feet cut outs. I love my van but will be even better when the back looks more like yours. Thanks for the pics I'll post some when I finish mine.

The pockets routed in the shelves have worked great.  I've yet to have a systainer jump out of place, and fall.  So far so good! [big grin]

Also finished up the other side.  Pictures real soon!!!

24 replies and no one mentioned the van needs GRAPHICS for God's sake.
Forget about storage he needs to wrap this van.
So here is my idea.
What you see inside is what you see on the outside.
His graphics will be what he has inside.
Who's with me?

Very cool setup, Jim! How did you attach the wedged pieces of wood to the metal?

Thanks Kristian!,

I attached them with some toggle bolts.  Didn't want to put self tapping screws
Because the wedges are pretty thick on the bottom.  The wegdes are more or less spacers to give support in the middle of the flat panels that the racking mounts to.

Hope this helps,
Jim

Ahh, I see - that's quite clever! Where the flat panels then attached with self tapping screws?

Yup!  The flat panels are the only pieces that are mounted to the van "permanently".  Everything else has just a few screws holding it from moving around.

Thanks for clarifying! I've just bought a small van and although I'm not sure I'll add shelves and such I guess I still would be a little hesitant to "puncture" the metal... But as long as I don't see daylight or smell diesel I guess it'll be okay….!  [wink]

Thanks again.

Here are some pics of mine. It's not done yet but all the systainers have a home and are really easy to get in and out.

Wing79, I'm about to start building out my Promaster and I'm using what you did as my inspiration. Is that 1/8 tempered hardboard you used on the walls? MDO for the shelves?
Thanks!
