hi there.

iv got some scribing to do  on some skirting  and coping the ends.

i cant afford a ras yet .

would a pad off the ras115 on my angle grinder  be comparable.
i know the dust colection would be non existant but i could rig something  up.

would this work for scribing

thanks alan

the stiff sandpaper disks you can get for grinding would work better, put 2 back to back and it gives you a thinner "cutting edge" as the ras pad looks rather thick for getting into the detail of moldings.

im sure theres a few vids on u tube using this methood. for me its jigsaw all the way, not loads of dust flying around

There is no way i would scribe like that. 1 slip with that 36 grit and your hands would have no calouses for sure

You need to be mindful of the rpm's you're dealing with ... a high rpm for the RAS would be considered a low rpm for an angle grinder. An angle grinder can easily be spinning faster than 10K rpm.

Be careful !

For scribing I use the RAS pad that has a flat backing and attachment for standard grinder sanding discs.  This works extremely well.  However, I use the variable speed quite often when scribing so ymmv with a standard grinder (I tried it and didn't like it except for mdf).

If you decide to use your grinder you can put two sanding discs back to back.

No need for anything Festool-related for scribing with a grinder.  Use any 36-40 grit fiber sanding disc and as stated above, just put them on the shaft back-to-back and go to town.

Having the grit on both sides allows you some flexibility to touch up adjacent surfaces without adjusting your hold on the tool.

I scribed for some time with my Makita cordless grinder - if you attach a 2 1/4 vac hose to your work top and scribe right near it - you can just about do it dust free.

Even when you get the Festool RAS, I would just use the standard buy-anywhere fiber grit discs.  Otherwise you'll be burning through the fancy fast-fix  discs 2-3 per year.
