Re-boring Forrest TS blades to fit the Hammer K3 TS

Has anyone had their TS blades re-bored to fit the K3?

I have an email in to Forrest about this but have not heard back from them.  Info on this seems to be fairly scarce from my net searching.  If I can have some of my existing Forrest blades re-bored at a reasonable price I think I would be ahead of the curve if they work after re-boring. [scratch chin]

All comments and suggestions are most welcome.

I'm sure the hole can be enlarged and some kind of locating holes for pins added but at what cost unless you find a machine shop that does small piece work.  What happens if you need to get a blade sharpened?

FWIW...I asked Forrest if they would rebore a new ChopMaster Signature blade to fit a Kapex. They declined and did not recommend it.

Good question? 

Forrest does make a 6-inch dado set for the Hammer K3, so if they can do that then I would think they could re-bore my old Forrest blades and also re-sharpen them.  I could be wrong.

I have another email in to Forrest and hopefully they will provide a solution to this puzzle.

Not good news! 

I was hoping to have my 12-inch and a few 10-inch Forrests re-bored to use on my not-yet-delivered K3.  I read about this being done somewhere on the net.  However, if the re-boring renders the blades unusable then it makes no sense to have it done only to ruin still-useable TS blades.

Modifying existing parts opens on to liability issues and that might be their concern.  Because of this if you had this done by a machine shop, you be stuck getting them to sharpen your modified blade.

There are certainly other competent blade manufacturers or machine shops that would be capable of this task. I just went back to Forrest because the blade was new and didn't want to risk any warranty issues.

I hear you loud and clear on the liability issues.  The last thing I need is to have an accident on a $6K machine by trying to save a few bucks.  Makes no sense now that you have made me see it under a different light.

This may also be why I have not heard back from Forrest.

OK, I heard back from Tony Ferrato of Forrest and this is what he said:

"Yes we can re-bore you blades to fit the Felder Hammer K3.

The cost to re-bore each blade is $37.50"

So that is good news.  I emailed him back asking if the blades can be sharpened after the re-boring.

Will report back on this when he responds.

It is best to sharpen them after boring for concentricity ID to OD."

I will be shipping off my blades tomorrow to have them re-bored and will report back on their performance when my K3 is up and running.

I also think $37 is steep. It's not rocket science, any half decent machine shop can do it.

I think it's the combo of being able to enlarge the diameter of the arbor diameter while still producing the concentricity necessary on the OD of the saw blade. I could machine the arbor diameter to within spec, yet I would not be able to produce the needed OD concentricity because I lack the equipment. You pay for capabilities. Money well spent.

Forrest is over priced, from blades, to sharpening, to custom work, and shipping.

I usually toss every Forrest blade I find with stuff.

Don't see many coming out of industrial settings.

Contact Leitz Tooling if you are having issues getting the job done, its costs about $30.00 CDN to have a standard blade rebored and pinholes added. I had my Freud Dado set done and it was 100.00. Never had a problem. The 2 pinholes add to the cost but any reputable sharpening service should be able to handle the task with Forrest seeming to be the highest I've heard of.

Been using a lot of Everlast blades these days. There are saw shops all over the place here, I pay 10 to 15 bucks to have almost any blade sharpened.
