RE: New Tool Registration

I would be shocked if this hasn't already been covered before but I would like to ask if the dealer "registers" any new tool purchase with Festool, INC.

I purchased a Syslite yesterday at my local Woodcraft Store. As I made my purchase I asked the dealer if they register the purchase with Festool (i.e. serial number with my contact information). He said that I should send back the "card". Of course when i got home there is no registration card with the syslite. I was always under the impression that as you make a Festool purchase the dealer would take care of registering the tool with Festool.

The reason I ask this question is that I am under the impression that if your Festool is stolen, Festool will replace it for free. I must admit that I am not sure why I think this as it seems way too good to be true. Fortunately I have never had this experience but I am sure you need to have all of your tools registered with Festool for this type of "insurance", if it exsists.

Maybe someone could help set me straight.

Thanks!

John

Yes, dealers are required to register Festool tool purchased with Festool USA. This can be done by faxing in a form that Festool provides or by doing it in a dealer portal. As far as covering theft, I've never heard that to be true, but I'm not the authority. It is helpful when a dealer registers the tool for the customer when any warranty service is needed. No need to dig around for receipts - you're already in Festool's system.

Theft coverage is a UK thing.

Syslites are a bit "on the fence" as my dealer registers everything for me, but didn't register the Syslite simply because is was perceived as an accessory.

The theft insurance is part of the perks of registering your tools in Europe but not here in North America.  Here for instance is a link from the Festool U.K. site:  http://www.festool.co.uk/Service/festool-Services/Pages/New-tool-in-the-event-of-theft.aspx

Although dealers are required to register it but in real life it does not always happen.  Getting warranty service on your tools in NA is not dependent on registration so keep your receipts for proof of purchase.

EDIT> moved reply out of quote box.

Woodcraft does provide tool registrations to us on a regular basis. There is no tool theft replacement program in the US/Canada as others have mentioned.

My experience with Festool USA and my primary Festool dealer has been excellent. Even when I have bought Festools from other authorized dealers the registration has been taken care of by the dealer involved. Over the years I have spoken to the service department several times, but so far I have not needed to send any Festools back to them for repair.

Given the high UK stolen tool co-pay, I am not sure that is such a great deal.

What makes far better business sense to me is to include expensive portable tools along with all the other equipment of a business under a comprehensive insurance policy. Only occasionally do any of my Festools leave my shop for site work. Two of the cabinet makers working for me still do some installation, but they use their personal tools for most of that. I keep one Kapex on an UG stand looking factory fresh, along with a dedicated CT36 especially for site work. However those fellows prefer to use their own Kapex and CT36.

My shop is designed to make theft from burglary unlikely. The property is surrounded by security fences and there is a sophisticated electronic detection system. Honestly I am far more concerned about loss from fire than theft.

How about having a chat with your insurance company?

100 pound for a new tool is not a good deal?  ??? Should they give them away then?

Alex, chances are an ordinary business comprehensive insurance policy will not cost much more when portable tools are included. In the UK and most other places when you are in business you absolutely are required to have liability insurance, as well as vehicle coverage. So a prudent person in business, such as the original poster, would be smart to buy the portable tool coverage. Shop around if that coverage is expensive.

As always, Alex, I am not here to argue and only share my own extensive experience in business. What you or any other FOG members does with my suggestions is beyond my control.

Haha.  Theft on my Festool Stuff is the last thing I'm worried about.  Around here, the thieves wouldn't have a freaking clue what they are looking at.  If they did break into my shop, the Dewalt stuff and Bosch stuff would be gone.  Festool, however would still be there.
