Funnily enough, I was thinking about that earlier today. The US is the only country (I think) that has the 30-day return policy. I guess there must be people out there who abuse the system (buy something to use for one job, then return it) as well as those who exchange (buy a TS55, then return it & swap for the TS75, for example).

So Shane, what does happen to all the tools that are returned?

First, we have very, very low number of tools returned under the 30-day guarantee program. So, that really doesn't create a problem.

As for the tools that we do get back, there are several things that are done with them in the U.S. Here are some of them...

- Used in our training facilities
- Provided to our regional sales manager for demo purposes
- Sometimes available for purchase by Festool employees, not for resale, of course

Dealers may also get them for demo purposes, but I'm not certain.

So, when are you hiring?  Then again, I would work two weeks, get paid, then hand my paycheck back in exchange for tools, repeat.

I've always wondered about this question. My thought was that there is some sort of back door set-up in place. The reason I say that is because there is a guy who sells, barely used Festools on ebay quite regularly and he is based out of Indy. Apparently I was wrong. Never bought any of them since they always go too close to new price, no point.

Even if Festool's return rates are very, very low, it's hard to believe that there aren't far more than enough tools coming back to fully stock the training centers, supply some regional sales managers, etc.  How many RAS115s do you need per year to satisfy the above ? It's not like there are lots of new tools coming out every year - most of the line has been around for more than a couple of years.

I know my local dealer pays for his demo tools - he offered to buy back one reconditioned tool just so he'd feel less bad about putting it on demo.

So do Festool employees get an "employee discount" when they buy these tools?

I've always wondered if employees at other Festool dealers have to pay full retail for Festools, or whether they are allowed an employee discount.  Does anyone know?

Yes, they do, but it I'm not sure Festool would appreciate me revealing how much.  I'll leave that for Shane if he so chooses.  If they want brand new, they have to pay full retail like us.

Festool does get returned items, but not often. They won't allow their local dealers to sell the refurbished equipment. I was for years sitting pretty in Southern California. The guy in charge of Festool USA lived in Santa Barbara, so  they had a distribution/warehouse/showroom there in an industrial park. You would send or take items to be repaired there. Just for your information, Santa Barbara is a picturesque and quaint town but very, very rural. Near nothing. Not even useful as a gasoline or lunch stop a quarter of the way up the coast from Los Angeles on the way to San Francisco. A poor choice for logistics, I would say.

They moved the West Coast distribution to Las Vegas. And then relocated all servicing to the new HQ in Indiana. So your answer is, yes you can buy discounted refurbished tools. But only if you show up at their door. I called regularly to the Santa Barbara facility looking for a C-12. I stopped by twice on North/South drives up the coast. They never had what I wanted. Then, at about XMAS of 2007 they got C-12 in. But under no amount of persuasion would they ship it. As I recall, the new price of the tool was around $340 or $360 and they were willing to sell it for $200 with the Systainer.

If you live near Indianapolis, you just might be Mr. Lucky. Otherwise, dream on.

I would hate for someone to make the pilgrimage to our headquarters only to find out that there is no possibility of purchasing refurbished tools. There is currently no opportunity to purchase refurbs in the U.S. from anywhere, including direct from us if you show up at our building.
