My ETS 150/3 arrived and I wanted to put a Hard Pad on.
Whoa.  I could not crack the hex nut.
I didn't see a lock for the pad rotation and went at it to a point, before I said "It shouldn't be that difficult"
Looked in the manual.

Looked at the bolt that came with the new pad... looks right thread to me.

Perhaps an driver drill...

If you have a cordless impact driver you could mount a hex nut driver in it & hit it with the impact. I find that the hammering of the impact works where a steady pull does not sometimes.

I was exactly the same with mine. Convinced it shouldn't have required that much torque to remove, but it did! Don't be afraid, it *will* loosen and you won't kill it.

Exactly.
Milwaukee impact driver... done.

Thanks to everyone for the replies.

I was reading the Festool Catalog (For the X-Time)  and noticed, to my surprise, that the ETS 150 is not a random orbital sander.
What is it?

Err, yes, it is a random orbit sander.

I went back and looked at the index page.  Correct.  They are indeed under the orbital category.

It threw me that they only mention Random Orbital for the DTS 400 and RTS 400, as if those were the only ones.

Hi,

Other way around ETS series is Random Orbit.  RS and DS are just Orbit.

I needed to pull the pad on my ETS EC 150/3 today, of course I hadn't seen or had forgotten this thread.  The length of the 5mm hex key supplied was a clue to the torque needed to remove the cap screw holding the pad, but try as I might it would not come out.  I did discover that the cap screw is made of pot metal as the wrench was starting to gouge it.

I was thinking the usual... some sort of thread locker? Left hand thread?  Hidden set screw?  Magic chant?  [unsure]

Of course none of these apply, at least in this case.  A quick tap with a 5mm hex on my Milwaukee 3/8 impact wrench and it popped right out.  And yes I did touch my Festool sander with a Milwaukee impact, it was shameful but necessary.

And I would bet that that pad (the original) was installed with a pneumatic impact at the factory.  They need to dial it back a bit.

After extricating the impact hex from the gouged cap screw I re-installed using just the hex wrench supplied.  I can easily check and re-tighten it rather than need to use the impact to change pads.
