I took off the pad to double check for dust buildup, and when I put it back on it will only operate in aggressive mode, regardless of whether the switch is set to orbital or aggressive.  What gives?

Have you tried jerking it back and forth clockwise/counterclockwise with the stop depressed?

Tom

Yes. And the switch goes back and forth easily, but machine still stays in aggro mode

I don't know what else to suggest other than:

I'm listening to Junior Brown's "Surf Medley" and all of my Festool tools work perfectly...

Maybe tap it with a dead blow or rubber hammer while running?

Tom

If none of the above work, it sounds like time to call Festool Service.

Showing your vintage [wink]

Check out Steve Hill's Surf Medley if you haven't already.

ROTEX sounds like it needs to see the Festool doctors.

Schade. I just bought it specifically for this job I'm in the middle of, for which I have to produce pristine paneled walls in a 20x20 room.  I ended up finishing what was left in aggro, since I was already up to 220 - fortunately it still looks pretty tight, thanks to the combination of the TS and the Rotex.  Guess 'll stop by the dealer on Monday to see if it can be sorted out. Thanks for the suggestions anyway.

Holy crap.  The hammer method worked.  I'll still probably take it in just to check -- but in the meantime I'm good to go on any touch up sanding I have to do on the job.  Thanks Tom.

Sometimes, things just get stuck.

There are tolerances in every manufacturing process and statistics can be used to determine those tolerances. Sometimes, the nth problem comes home...

I'm glad it worked!

Tom

Hello.

If the machine is on eccentric/random orbit mode and the sanding pad still want`s to "rotate" (like in a rotary sander or kinda like in Rotex mode) it might be because the lower ball bearing (above the sanding pad) is starting to seize up. This is normal wear and tare which can occur in time. You can do an easy test to determine this. Put the machine to eccentric/random orbit mode, turn the machine on and press down the sanding pad with your hand. If the ball bearing is ok, the sanding pad should stop "rotating" when you press it and the sanding pad should do only the eccentric movement. This test can also be used with other eccentric sanding machines, for example ETS 150, ETS 125.

I`m not saying that this is what`s wrong with your machine, this is just a tip.
