Anyone have any experience with how 1/4 inch bits fit in the foam insert? Was going to get one of these but if the 1/4 inch bits bop all over the systainer I may forgo.

Any help is appreciated. thx

I have the older version in the classic Systainer.  1/4" shank bits fit just fine, I'd assume they do in the current version too.

I got it but I found I needed more space.

So I contacted Tom Belmare at tool home we talked this over.

We decided on getting a larger systainer with a extra foam piece, so he sent me a #3 systainer and router bit foam so Both would fit and I could stack them together in the systainer.

It is large enough to add another 3rd piece of the foam if needed.

So basically what I suggest to do is order a #3 systainer and 2 pieces of the foam for the router bits. You shouldnt have any trouble fitting everything in there , you have  room to add  a 3rd piece of foam down the road if needed.

Thanks guys...sancho I am confused, are you just buying a larger systainer and then stacking the precut router foams on top of the bits?

Although the name has only D8 and D12, there are 3 different size holes all around it, D6, D8, and D12.

It handles 1/4" bits very well.

Thanks Tom..I tried to fit some of my 1/4 inch bits into the 1010 sytainer and those are clearly for the 8mm bits, which is what prompted my question.

I put a bunch of 1/4" bits in the Sys-router. If something doesn't fit in there, I just pop a new hole where I want it!

I have a butt load of bits 1/2" and 1/4" including huge panel bits almost the size of a shaper bit. So I got the # 3 systainer w/ 2 foam router bit inserts.  Thats way i can store all y bits in one systainer. even the long ones 3" long etc. . I am going to put some spacers around the edges of the bottem piece of foam/ bits so it will fit the bits better. Aient really worried to much, about the top piece of foam riding on top of the bottem bits after all hey its foam , using the #3 systainer  leaves me room to add another foam insert if needed.

Thats the beauty of the system is adaptability. If I fill up the # 3 systainer, then Ill get a # 4 systainer.

I like keeping everything in one place.

Sancho, great idea stacking multiple layers of bits, do you cut hand holes on the sides of the top layer inorder to remove it easier?

the router bit systainer is one of the many items on my wish list, i have always wondered about the pre stamped holes though.. to they tend to be limiting on how many bits you can fit?

does anyone have experience with kaizen foam and making your own bit insert?  would it work the same?    i have a feeling that it would allow you to fit more bits and also arrange them any way you would like

Kaizen is good stuff. And yes would work well for this application. Buy an empty sys 1 2 or 3 and have at it with a utility knife.

There is precut stuff for sustainers out there somewhere too. eBay I think.

I thought it would be a good use for it, and it will allow me to layout the bits however they fit best.

funny you mentioned the precut stuff, i actually know the guy who sells it, he lives relatively close to me and i met him buying some used festool stuff from him, really cool dude..  i havent picked any up yet, also in his ebay pictures it looks like he is using classic systainers, however im sure he could make them for t-loc also

I use the 1010 for most of my installation work, so all my 1/4 bits are stocked in a SYS1.
I simply cut a piece of 3/4 mdf to fit the systainer and drilled holes for the bits in a grid.  I also have a dedicated spot for the track guide and template set.  In four years since I've never had any bounce loose, but you could always add egg crate foam to the lid if you wanted.
