Router Plane

I bought an old Stanley just because I found a pristine one cheap. As a box maker, now I wonder how I ever got by without one. For insetting hinges they work so well.

Well, I ordered my router plane today and even though it is back ordered, the will honor the free shipping.  I also got the Narrow plane blade set. Once I get familiar with it, I may order the inlay cutterhead.

I order a router plane from LV as well (on the last day of free shipping.) I was torn between the LV and LN. I also ordered a 60-1/2 low angle adjustable bolck plane from LN, I will have it tomorrow (Friday!) These will be my fist planes and I'm sure more will follow  [big grin]  Probably be ordering a LN #4 or #4-1/2 as soon as I can make my mind up.

I have both the LN #4 and #4 1/2 and much prefer the #4 if you're looking for some opinions.  It's a lot easier to push and does a great job with a sharp iron in it.

I have the Veritas router plane with all the blades and the inlay attachment.  This tool is pleasant to use and you can get very precise. Ron is right, Ebay will occassionally have 71's for a great price that are in excellent condition. You can buy new blades from Lee Valley for these.

There are some good reviews of Veritas planes at Canadian Woodworking.com. Go to Home/Resources/Reviews/Veritas Shooting Plane, for example.

Just tried the LN Large closed throat router plane at a handtool event. Very nice. You can get an adaptor to fit smaller blades to do inlay work if you don't want to invest in inlay tools.
