Router Planing Bits

For those of you that use your router to plane large surfaces, what bit(s) do you use ?  I've been using a 1.5" surfacing  bit for some time.  It has worked well but I'm thinking of upgrading to a larger bit.  Amazon sells an Amana bit (RC 2250) with replaceable cutters (look like the cutters on a spiral planer drum) for $175, 1.5" cutting diameter.  Has anyone had experience with this bit ?  Anyone have a favorite ?

I'm currently using this Amana in an OF 2000 and I like it.

It's 2 1/16 diameter with a 1/2 inch shank. I find the larger diameter works better. Nice smooth cut.

If you want the replaceable cutters, I'd take a look at the Amana RC 2251. It's 2.5 in diameter. Although it should take a hefty router to spin it.

I'm a huge fan of insert tooling, having used it for years on metal lathes. Interesting that this particular flycutter is targeted to the CNC community. Makes sense. Thanks for posting Ron, I'm going to pick one up for my Milwaukee 5625 router.

Infinity has a double shear planer that's 2" for under a $ 100, I have there 1.5" mortise with 1.5" bearing  and really like  it, it haseems the same design just not the 2" profile.

You might want to try the Amana 45453.  It's available on Amazon.

Router planing with a hand held router is one process I have never done. To not change the subject of the thread if someone would like to have a detailed process with pictures in a new thread that would be awesome. I've used the process on my CNC and used the bits you change the carbide cutters on. We changed them out half way through the job due to being dull after a good 30 minutes of cutting.

I've got that one and I'd don't particularly like it. I get too much tear out.

I use it in my OF 2200 in a router sled based on Nick Offerman's design as shown in Fine Woodworking a couple of years ago, and have had no issues of tear-out.  It's not CNC, but it gets the job done.  I use it to straighten out a slab that has developed a twist or warp, and once that has been accomplished, I run the result through the DW735 planer before sanding, just to get a clean surface.  That said, I have never seen tear-out as you mention.

I have used that Infinity bit too, with very good results. Every bit I have bought from Infinity has served me well.
