I’m in the midst of making a box for a second’s friend’s ashes. I’ve made two display flag cases for departed friends recently.

I’m always picky about the things I have made over the past 50 years of woodworking, but making these things for sad events make me want to be as perfect as possible.

The only consolation is the appreciation expressed by my friend’s widows.

A good friend of mine has made ash containers for himself and for his wife, now both in their 90s. The thought of being able to take care of yourself and your very loved one at the very end of the life journey must be fulfilling. I harbor the thought of making my own casket, but it might not be a green move because caskets made of carton box material are commercially available. My own wish is to have my ashes just scattered in the mountains.

Yes getting to a certain age replaces weddings and graduations as events to attend with funerals and celebrations of life. The consolation is that you are still around to attend them.

I have far far too many dead people in my Contacts folder. Most of my hunting companions are either dead or too old to hunt in the wild places.
