Sanding 20 oak panel doors

I am replacing ALL the doors in my home (about 24 doors) with oak 6 panel doors. I need to sand them to prep them for staining, sand lightly after staining and twice more after each coat of varnish. I am looking for a recommendation on which sander to purchase. Which ever it is, I would like it to attach to my Festool dust extraction unit. I have a RO 90 DX Rotex Multi-Mode Sander that I like, but for 24 door, its too small for this job.

I was thinking of a Festool RTS 400 567817 Orbital Rectangular Sander, but I wanted to hear some feed back. The larger sanders are nice, but they dont attach to the dust extractor.

ets 150 or 125 would be my suggestion.

I would also recommend the ets 125 or 150. Great sanders should do well for you on the flats. You can use the Delta pad on the RO90 for the details. Don't forget about the break-in period on the ets's.

I am unsure why you feel the bigger sanders won't attach to the dust extractors. All of the sanders attach very nicely.

Leo, welcome to the forum. As mentioned, the ETS sanders would be a nice fit for your task. And, all of our sanders will attach to our dust extractors. I'm not sure where you got the impression that they don't. The only tools that don't work with our dust extractors are the drills.  [blink]

RS 2, it's is in the same family as the one you are looking at

The large 4 1/2" x 9" (115 x 228 mm) sanding surface and a 3/32" (2.5 mm) sanding stroke makes the RS 2 the perfect choice for fine sanding large surfaces. Typical applications include intermediate sanding of varnished doors, leveling large surfaces, and fine sanding of delicate stock. An additional ergonomic hand grip enhances controllability and reduces fatigue during long sessions. This sander is especially good for applications that require an absolutely even surface (like tabletops).

This is the one I plan on getting when I start redoing the doors in my house.

What sort of prep sanding are you doing? Is it already bare wood or are you stripping off old finish / stain?

I do not think the RTS400 is enough larger to make a big enough difference on the time it will take to do that many doors. If you really want to speed the work up the RO150, will do that plus give you a lot of versatility.

RS2E will also make it faster but has more limited applications and It would surprise me if it was faster than the RO150.  Either of the ETS150s would also be a good choice especially for your between coat sanding.

I would pass on the RO125 in your situation since you have the RO90, I think a bigger difference in size would benefit you more for the door job and down the road. Thr RO 90 is perfect for the corners and edges.

If you need to sand molding profiles around the panels then consider the LS130 too.
