Scribing Around Large Areas

Hi -

I have a set of curved steps around which I need to lay down plywood underlayment.  The steps have a rough radius of 6 ft or so. 

What method(s) does one use to scribe the plywood to fit around the steps?

Cardboard, scribing compass, utility knife, packing tape.

For large irregular areas that need a good fit I cut strips of 3mm mdf around 100mm (or 4 inches) wide and scribe the shape of the individual runs,then lay the strips over each other and use hot melt glue to join them where they intersect.

You should end up with a frame of the outside,depending on the final size you may need to glue in some cross pieces just to hold it together while you move it trace on your ply

The countertop installers I used did this to make a template of the old counters before fabricating the new ones.  I don't recall that they had to do much to get the new ones in, so it appears that it worked really well.
