Shallow Cuts with Carvex?

Hello,

I need to use my carvex to cut out some 18mm material, but a bit below that is some other material that I don't want to damage. Is there any way to change the height of the carvex depth? Is a short blade the only option? Or any clever jigs? Basically I'd like to be cutting at max 25mm.

Thanks!

Neither short blade nor a spacer will work.
From your description the distance between material you are cutting and the surface you want to keep intact is 7 mm (25mm - 18mm). Jigsaw amplitude (stroke) is more than that, it's somewhere around 25 mm. To avoid hitting the surface below, the blade would have to pull out of the cut completely in the upper position and loose contact with the material.

As said up-thread, a router would be a better tool for the task at hand, but since you said you "need" to use a jigsaw... you could make a 'sled' for the jigsaw so to change the cutting angle. This way you could have full stroke without having full depth. You would likely also want to add a starting hole to make the get-going a bit easier.

Thanks for the replies - point noted about the length of cut - confess I hadn't thought of that.

I do have a router (1400) with the edge guide and also a rail attachment. I've just not actually used it yet, so will need to practice is a bit first. There is a section I was definitely going to need to use it for, but I thought I might try the rest with a jigsaw. At the moment I've only got a 1/2 inch straight cutting bit, so figured the router would mean a lot more material.

This is the pic of what I need to cut out, I need to take the highlighted area down 18mm or so. 18mm also happens to be the thickness of the horozontally running wood.

Would be thankful for any suggestions as to how I'd best go about it. I have the 800mm rail. Another router bit would be in budget if necessary.
