Sharpening system for plane irons?

[member=45856]blaszcsj[/member] Exact same setup on the Duosharp.  What type of stones are the 4/6000?

I have the Duo set as well and I am playing around with them like you are. What grit stones did you get? I got the course and xtra course and fine/extra fine sets. I have seen some other stones up to 4000 and 6000 as well...

[member=37411]Edward A Reno III[/member] I guess I said this earlier in this post, but I've been told by "experts" that you only need to take the primary bevel to the 1200 or less level. When doing the secondary bevel, I use waterstones. I'm still practicing with the Shapton glass stones, but they work extremely well. Even though I'm still not perfect on the secondary bevel, it's still better than other methods I've used in the past. I'd recommend the Sharpton glass stones, but I also understand that you might want to go to a 10,000 instead of 8000 as Shapton stones aren't quite as fine. Then again, you might not notice the difference. My chisels weren't anywhere as close to as sharp as they are now even with the 8000 Shapton's.

I have an older Worksharp that I use to rough shape the bevel, than switch to the Veritas guide and wet/dry paper and a glass top. The  guide, oil, paper and a DMT very fine diamond ( for site touch up) all fit in a mini sys. I cut my paper 2" wide by 8.5" and start at 400 grit to 3000. KISS works best for me.
