I use the same trick to be able to visualize progress. Something I
learned years ago grinding J bevels on heavy wall pipe.

I use a Tormek rather than a grinder for getting the basic angle, though I have a slow-speed grinder that I use for other stuff.  The Tormek gets fired up 2-3 time a year, to be honest.  I use a combination of sandpaper, lapping film, and waterstones for flattening and honing.  I like the waterstones, but could do with just sandpaper and lapping film.
